No, that's incorrect.
You can do it from the drivers seat without any computers and the need for a dealership.
Steps should be as follows:
Key in position 1,
Hit call pickup button and OK button for roughly 5 seconds
You'll get a menu; from which you can do various things - dyno mode, reset services, etc.

I don't have the message anymore, but i just tried what you said for 5 minutes in position 1 and while car is started and nothing on the screen appeared.

Perhaps I was just missing a step.. however it seemed to work each and every time I attempted at getting into the menu..
Quite possibly being that it's a Canadian spec'd car, might have something to do with it..

The PDF above has the service reset instructions and it works fine on my 2010 C63. Make sure you are following the instructions exactly and understand what they mean as in Key in position 1 etc. I was having the horn honking as well until I figured out I was pushing the answer phone button and the mute button instead of the answer phone button and OK button. Think you are missing a step or doing something wrong.
