One air flow sensor facing the other way(why)?

I was checking my air filters today to make sure that they are road worthy when I realized that the air flow sensors are positioned in opposite directions.

In the past I accidentally found in other cars that putting a MAF in the worng position might even cause the car to not start at all.

I am very curious to know why the C63 is running this way, in any other car/situation you would have the air flow sensors positioned in the same direction.

At first I thought that the mechanic accidentally installed one of the air flow sensors worng but then I realized that they have a notch and they only go one way. Can someone explain? it is a bizarre design to say the least....

The air flows the same way, only one is upside down. Cheaper than making a Lt and Rt MAF sensor.

Notice on the driver side you can see the release clip, on the passenger you cant. Its just flipped over so the air direction doesnt change

This is the same way with our brake rotors. They used one mold to manufacturer both the left and right rotors. If you look closely, the one rotor rotates in the correct direction, while the opposite side doesn't. It the same for the rear rotors as well. I guess that it was cheaper then creating a left and a right mold, lowers the production costs. Besides who would notice these things right? I've noticed, and many others have as well.

^^ OK, I will be very specific about it then. I had a Subaru WRX a long time ago and accidentally installed the MAF 180 degrees the worng way. The car will never start until you got the MAF back right. These things are delicate and I am under the impression that they only read well in one position.
