Quaife LSD owners, any gear whine??
Hello!
I have installed Quaife LSD recently.
After about 1,000miles of break-in, I hear very slight gear whine at specific speed and load.
It does NOT happen all the time. Only happens at certain speed and load.
Does anyone have similar experience?
The whining noise is very minimal but still hear-able.
I am wondering if other Quaife LSD owner has similar experience.
Because it seems like gear seems to whine after hard/track runs, I am thinking about trying different(or better) gear oil.
TIA!

I have never had one apart so maybe someone who has can help out regarding the method of adjusting lash in the C63 diff. The diff has to have some method of adjustment for manufacturing tolerances.

The above guys are correct, in that it IS the gear pattern that is making the noise. The QUAFFI CAN NOT make an udiable gear whine.
That noise you are hearing is from the ring and pinnion pattern being off EVER so slightly.
Usually will NOT hurt anything, except anoy the driver.
I had a 8.8" Ford, yes I know Ford, whine on the interstate at certian speeds, and she lasted for ever.
Note: That was for a 1 off custom diff made for me by Auborn.
Changed the ratio about 20,000 miles later and the original gears looked brand new still.
Who installed it?
And do not forget to check back with them on IF they changed any shims, or check the backlash and gear pattern.
Good luck

I did.
I have installed quite many differential on different cars but C63 diff did NOT had any adjustment-ability of back lash.
My guess would be....
I think that the differential itself were matched to the diff housing to position the ring and pinion gear correctly.
So if you change out the differential, the backlash might be off very slightly.
Also, this tiny whining noise comes ONLY after hard track run.
If the diff oil is new(or cold), it does not whine at all.
So I am leaning towards that it is the oil issue.
Wondering if anyone had similar issue after many laps of HARD track runs.

Whatever we're tuning!
What brand and weight oil are you using in the rear?
There are absolutely no adjustments that can be made on the Quaife for backlash and pinion angle. There are no shims and no way to move the contact point of the ring and pinion. It is a direct bolt in.
It is the easiest, no brain install so I am sure the install was done correctly especially since you have done rears before.
Did you put new taper bearings in? What about the c-clips on the axles? I always use new bearings and always replace the c-clips since they are what holds your axle in the diff. Is your rear leaking at all?

MB must have one hell of a good casting and machining process that does not require ANY adjustment of the pinnion depth or carrier side to side for proper gear lash/pattern.
Learn something new everyday I guess
As far as oil is conerned, if you used Mobil 1 or Red line diff oil, I would be hard pressed to beleive you are getting it hot enough to whine.
Bruce's post about bearings is a good thought, the c-clips is a bit of a strecth, IMHO. Although for a couple of bucks, why not

I am using 75W-140 Castrol gear oil.
The gear whine only comes in when diff is warm. Right after start, there is no whine at all.
I have reused C-clips and bearings.
I also had some leaking issue but it was defected seal. So I have replaced the seal.
It's very high frequency whining. Can it be the bearing issue??
