Opinions on Aftermarket filters
I know this topic has been discussed before but was wanting updated information on what peoples thoughts are on installing K&N filters. I've read horror stories on hear of the MAF's getting fouled up from the oil off the filters, isn't this more to do with them being over oiled and not letting them dry enough before installing. There seems to be other people running them without any issues at all. Also is there a noticeable difference in intake noise?

I ran K&N's for thousands of miles without issue. Currently I'm using AFE filters.
AFE Pro-Dry S Air Filter - no oiling - wash with soap & water.

Bought BMC filters a few years back and have had CEL four times, finally went in last week and remove them and replaced them with my OEM and charcoals, I do no feel a difference in performance in the seat of my pants and no CEL since, we will see what happens now...the code on the CEL on Star Diagnostics was the MAF circuit, which apparently is the whole mass air flow sensor, to air filters, to charcoal filters, to the "plumbing" of the air box etc, many different things it could have been., but the reisdent AMG mechanic at the dealer said remove the BMC and this will probably fix the problem. SO in the garbage they went today.

ran k&n on an 09... after a few thousand miles, got a cel... got it removed, then got a tune soon after. cel never came back. drove about 42k
ran k&n on 2010, never had a cell. got tune, headers... no cel... switched to bmc... no cel still

Ive already had a tune, I had to have it removed recently due to it taking 8-10 cranks to start. I had it re flashed back to standard and the car is perfect.
Im sending my ECU away next week for another tune and filters

Have had BMC for over 10k mi w/ no issues. If u don't have them installed w/ a flush seal, maybe the leak could cause a cel. I say this because having them fit flush near the Y connector is not easy. I use a flashlight to check under the airbox from the front to make sure it sits flush. I've changed my filters 4 times w/ no issues. New k/n or bmc filters shouldn't be over oiled like a refreshed one might.

I have had K&N filters which I was told that was causing a missfire/lean condition. Ater I put the stock OEM filters I never had any issues nor CEL ever.
The"horror" histories are exagerated. You just need to clean them and not oild them excesively. As far as the MAF goes, you could probably clean them with some spray can made for it.

You'll get huge imaginary performance gains with aftermarket filters. I know a guy who put them in and he says the car just feels faster.

Not to overstate the obvious but in most cars, drop-in replacement filters (ie. K&Ns, BMCs, etc), do practically nothing for performance. They are merely good for saving $$ so u don't have to keep shelling out for replacement filters. Of course, most owners don't realize that they are actually doing more harm than good if they don't clean & oil these filters regularly and properly.
And on THIS particular car, seems like it's more trouble than it's worth if they cause CELs.

Just installed K&N's yesterday (very easy install), didn't feel or hear any differences from stock. I'm glad I changed the stock ones out, though, the airbox was really dirty (10k miles on the car), and I cleaned the MAF's (with the MAF spray cleaner).
