Paging CEK - Question about taping off the chrome window trim

I saw from the link you posted to the 3M tape that it was 2" width.

Do you think it would be easier if I got a 1" thick tape vs. 2" ? With the 2" tape did you have to cut it down the long side to reduce the width for any of the trim pieces or were you able to use the full 2" width by sliding in/under the trim pieces?

Thanks in advance

p.s. if / when I actually do this I may hit you up for some additional pointers...thanks!

Imran

I think if you went with 1" wide tape you'd run the risk of having it be too narrow for some parts of the above the window trim. Trying to butt two strips together would be harder than removing material.

For those following along, he's talking about this tape:

3M 471 black vinyl tape:

I spent $37 (here, on amazon.com) and about 2 hours labor doing this. Because it's just vinyl tape it's easily removable.

I like the grill chrome, so I'm leaving it that way. I did the windows and the chrome strip on the trunk.

The car is kinda dirty in these shots. Sorry. Sue me.

Hope this helps.

anyone considered using the transparent one to make the chrome pieces a sort of brushed aluminum look?

Wonder what the "around the window" trim would look like with the 3M carbon fiber look-alike tape. Anyone done that ?

? about installation and going around corners

So during the install, on the curved parts of the trim, is the tape flexible enough that it will conform to the bends and curves without buckling or doubling up? Hope the question is clear.

You can always use 3M's Scotchprint Brushed Aluminum vinyl. I was going to try this myself.

This is it on an M steering wheel trim.

Yes, it stretches very well.

Not good, I think since you have to stretch the tape to make it work. I don't think carbon fiber stretched looks good (looks fake).

One more ? For CEK...as per my previous question about having too much width on the tape, did you find you had to actually cut along the long side when doing window trim or were you able to just "tuck" it inside along the trim. If you were able to tuck, how did you get it to stick on the inside of the trim

Yes, I had to cut *AFTER* I had the facing surfaces covered. Most will tuck inside though.

Suggestion: Just do it. You can't harm anything by just getting started. If you mess up the tape simply comes off and you can start again. Worst case is it takes you longer.

Get the 2" tape. You can fold it over the outer trim edges and trim off any you don't need.
