fog light messed up ! estimated $ 380.00 , really??
The glass of my left front fog light shattered recently, probably a rock from the wonderful roads in Houston (NOT). It still operates but according to the dealership the entire foglight needs replacement, estimated charge $380.00.
Dang it! Is this price right? My service rep suggested that there are plastic protection pads that can be put on the glass in order to reduce the chances of a repeat.
Any suggestions?

Yep.. it is a total ripoff.. The ring around the fog light (that cheap piece of plastic), is $80 alone.
My right one is busted... I have just covered it with emergency clear plastic and taped it on.. I will eventually replace it myself. The problem from what I hear is that you sort of need to remove the bumper to get to the housing to put the new one in. PS, you can find it cheaper online, about $120ish from https://www.getmercedesparts.com/mer...***-parts.html

It totally sucks and I feel bad for such a small expensive fix. What are the chances a rock would hit that exact location?!! Hope you find a reasonable alternative.

this is a rally common thing. several of my friends with C63s and evenregular C classes have busted a fog (winter) after the break and then replacement.... they protected the lenses with 3M PPF. They havent had an issue since =O)

Thanks for all the responses . Funny but the car was actually in for a warranty issue , sticking M/S/C selector button which they replaced and when it was time to pay i noted there were no charges . Come to find out they had forgotten to replace the foglight so have to come back.
With C63's newdude's suggestion of going to a glass shop, not sure if this actually possible but can always try.
Stay tuned.
O and the 3M film I am definitely going to do as well!

Try to source the parts from outside stores and replace it yourself. It's no surprise that the dealership is charging outrageous prices. I found that out recently when I bought a new windshield for my CL. Dealership tried to charge me $1300+tax without install and I was able to get one OEM for $723+tax....a whole $500 dollar difference.

Right? I'm on my third, all on the driver side, go figure.
The design is kind of a fustercluck, having to practically take off the bumper to fix it. I seriously want to just have them removed and patch over the holes. How sick would that be?

If you're interested in an example to prove it's not a stereotype, I made a machine for a company that had their German branch also making a machine to do a similar task. I used motors and a computer. The German branch made a machine that was 100% mechanical, blindingly complex, and ended up not being as flexible as my machine was.

It's german engineering. The philosophy being to sacrifice simplicity for elegance. What they miss is that adding complexity also adds points of failure.

My luck...just read this thread like 3 days ago and I just discovered that my passenger side fog light is cracked as well. Dealer quoted me $205 for parts and $90 for labor. Not too bad given the circumstances but man, wish I knew that they were fragile.
