*sigh* Cracked my rim yesterday...
At some point while driving around in DC yesterday, I got a flat, and a cracked rim apparently
Dropped it off to get fixed, crack is right along the lip, they are going to cut it out, and weld a new piece of block in there.. hopefully it works.. $175 vs buying a new rim will make my wife happier...

Sry to hear about ur misfortune, but I agree with most ppl about buying a new rim vs welding the damaged one. If u have a 3pcs wheel, u can always just buy the outer lip or inners lip.

Nothing good can become of this. You can't property repair a cracked or chipped wheel as the heating process usually weakens the metallurgy of major sections of the wheel causing the possiblity of catastrophic failure later on. Ask your wife wouldn't she be more happy if the cost of a new wheel outweights the cost of visiting you in the hospital or graveyard.
Sorry it happened, though.

In all seriousness, it's hard to compare your wheel damage/repair to the OP's. All I know is that risking wheel failure isn't worth saving a few bucks. If a reputable wheel repair company told me that there was ZERO risk of failure from repairing the wheel, then OK, otherwise new wheel IMO.

As for my previous description, it was very basic. Simply welding along the break will result in a failure later down the line. That is why you remove the section, and then add a new piece in its place and weld it. I will not be tracking or racing on these rims, I do plan on pickup up a set of OZ 19's that I will put summer tires on next summer.
Most of my driving is in traffic anyways, so its not like I am racing around :P

when I was younger I was building wheels for kinesis motor sports, and from the looks of that wheel, I would highly recommend getting a new wheel. A few bucks of savings is not worth your safety. Seems like the guys that’s so called fixing your wheel is more worried about his wallet then your safety.

Wait, how does welding a crack that would fail differ from welding a significantly larger area that would fail? Questionable logic there. And I'm in the get a new wheel camp.

I agree with everyone else on getting a new wheel. From an engineering background a crack and subsequent heating does affect the structural strength of the wheel. Driving at high speeds puts a massive amount of stress on the wheel and much of the strength of the wheel is contained in the outer rim. Just because you've had your wheel repaired successfully and haven't had any issues in two years doesn't mean it won't happen. I've studied a lot of aviation mishaps with similar situations due to faulty manufacturing or repair and once something was repaired or built, it's life was significantly reduced. The issues didn't manifest themselves until well down the road but when they did it was catastrophic. Food for thought.

Mercedes C63 amg, Bmw X5,
Come on man, you are driving an amg, and you are even considering getting cracked rim welded?? All I can say is that you should buy something cheaper so you can be safe in it.
