Widest Tires on option 19" wheels

Hi Guys, need to replace my rear tires. I have the 19" AMG multispoke wheels and was wondering if anyone runs wider than the 255 they come with? I was thinking 275/30/19 but not sure of rubbing issues..... any help would be appreciated.

I think many people here are running a 275/30-19 rear without issue but it likely depends on the tire. For example, Yokohama AD-08 run very wide and could possibly be problematic. The other issue is tire bulge but with a 30 profile tire it shouldn't be too bad. Also, some tires have very wide tread too so a 255 or 265 is as wide as many 275 tires. For example, if you put a 265 AD-08 on the rear the tread is as wide or wider than most 275 tires. I plan to run 235 front and 265 rears in an AD-08 and based on the specs that will give as much tread on the road as almost all 245/275 combos.

I might need some help here, gthal. When I look at the specs on the tire rack website, the AD08's are among the narrower profile tires. For example, the 275's have a section width of 10.7. The Pirelli's, the Conti DW's and the Michelin PSS all have 10.9 (all in the 19's). Is this an unreliable source? Where is a good place to look for the accurate numbers?
Thanks.

Look at tread width.

AD-08 265/30 - 10.3" tread

Conti 265/30 - 9.5"
Conti 275/30 - 10.6" (This measurement on Tire Rack must be wrong as the 285 measurement, below, is narrower!)
Conti 285/30 - 10.5"

PSS 265/30 - 10"
PSS 275/30 - 10.2"

The section width measures the widest part of the tire... likely from centre of the sidewall on the inside to the outside of the tire. The tread width measures what is actually touching the ground (which is what is important for traction). The 265/30 AD-08 is as wide from a tread perspective as most, if not all, 275/30 tires. I think there is some subjectivity to how manufacturers measure tread width so take it with a grain of salt BUT if you ever see a set of AD-08 tires in person, they are VERY square sidewalls which is why there is so much tread. Clearly the widest tread for a given size tire I have ever seen by a margin. It is also why a 275 AD-08 will rub sometimes when a 275 tire from another brand won't. Having said that, there is a compromise with the AD-08 on comfort with the PSS being a better overall tire for DD use.

I have had great success with the RE-11 on my M3. Similar grip to the AD-08 but with better comfort, noise levels and wet traction. The reason I'm putting AD-08 on the car this spring is because a 265 AD-08 is 0.2" wider than a 275 RE-11. I don't like the extra sidewall height and associated bulge of the 275 tires (asthetics only) on a 9" wheel and I can get MORE tread on the ground with the 265 AD-08 and less sidewall profile. If the rear wheels were 9.5" or 10" wide, then I might have a different opinion.

I'm a bit of a tire *****... I don't tend to have long term relationships with any given tire or brand

I'm lowered on 20mm springs and am running Pirelli P-Zero 275/30/19.

Thanks for great explanation of your rationale. The AD08's also test well performance wise. I am curious to find out how many miles you'll get out the the rears. With no track days or 1/4 mile racing, I only got 6k on the stock Pirellis. I got almost 10k on my Nitto NT05's (went to 275's on these), and another 10k on my Dunlop Dirreza Star Specs.

I'm running 275/30/19 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 on my rear 19 inch multispokes at stock height. no rubbing issues.
