ENGINE OIL MESSAGE..FEEDBACK PLEASE!

Hey everybody,

i have a 2012 c63 amg sedan..i got the car mid september, this past friday i hit the 1,000 mile mark , so i went to the dealership to change the oil..i know it might not have been necessary but i wanted to anyways..

today, i went to my friends house in staten island NY..as i was coming home, a message lit up which stated "Check engine oil at next refueling". when i got home, i checked the oil level in the car and i think it might have needed a little more oil. when you take out the oil stick my understanding is that the oil level needs to be between those two red marks on the stick.

do you guys think maybe thats what the message was ?? any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

I had that problem. It ended up being a little low on oil. We added a bit and the messages stopped.

Since this car has only been out since 2008, I don't blame you for not searching. Besides CELLryuu you are likely the only other person on this board to have ever had this message. I guess you could do a search on here but odds are you won't find anything. Good luck solving this unique dilemma.

So he burned 1 quart of oil after his oil change 2 days ago?

The dealer must not have put in the correct amount of oil when doing the oil change. Bring it back and make them top it off.

Cars.
Don't you have to take the car to the dealer to change the oil to filter out all the metal stuff that may of come off? I wouldn't all that stuff going around my engine.

Yeah, I was trying to understand that one as well. Something about needing to go to the dealer to get oil to filter out all the metal stuff. Hmmm, to that poster, please don't try to work on cars, ever.

BMW covers an oil change in the M3 around 1200 miles. Some people believe that an early oil change may remove particulate matter that can accrue during engine break in. He was referring to this issue. It's a topic full of controversy.

Modern car engines are broken in at the factory, before assembly. Therefore the old tradition of breaking in a new car doesn't apply anymore. If there are particles from rough edges, they are dealt with at the oil change before it sees the dealer showroom. Additionally, particles in the oil will be picked up by the oil filter, not float around freely in the oil pan.

Although there is no longer such a thing as break in oil, it doesn't hurt (other than your wallet) to change the oil after the first 1,000 miles. After that every 5,000 miles is good (twice as often as recommended) or once year if that is sooner. Your dealer just didn't put enough oil in, hence the light. Top it off and you should be fine. Given the large displacement size of the engine, don't be surprise if this light comes once between 5,000 mile changes . This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

I changed the oil in my car at 1,000 miles and cut open the filter - I won't say it was "full" of metal, but if someone else did, I would not argue with them. I changed the oil again at 5,000 miles, and the filter was spotless. I don't believe there was a problem, as the filter was doing what it was supposed to. But at the same time, whether or not engines are "broken in" at the factory, the oil is certainly not changed before delivery.

(Also, I am not sure how an engine could be broken in before being assembled.)

Well sign me up for this one too. I saw that message last Thursday, never seen it before in any MB i have had. The C55 once said add oil but never check at next refueling.
Anyhow, I got home and check oil with the dipstick and it was just below the arrow on the low side. I added half a quart and the message went away on Friday. It has been 7k miles since last oil change (at the dealer) so...oil change this past weekend.
Now, I have done oil changes on the CLK and the C350 so I was thinking this would be a breeze..not exactly the way it worked out but its done, no more message, and I will probably do oil changes every 5-6k miles.

i see the message 8000-9000 miles after a service almost every time... i'm about 1500 miles from my 30000 service and i got the message yesterday... the c63 drinks a lot of oil... every time i get the message, i take it to the dealership and have them top it off... i usually wait about 15 minutes, no appointment necessary... they seem to know about it

It's certainly nice when the dealership will do a courtesy top off for you. They wouldn't for my girlfriend, a few months ago. They told her, she needs to buy a quart from the parts department, but they'll fill it for her if she did. I was like what the hell, they'll top off the oil for me, why not her. But they cars do use up oil, some more than others.

Good advice.

To add, the need for topping off with extra oil should decrease as the engine gets more broken in [older].

my AMG is E class, but I got the message to check oil level at next fueling once....
added less than half a Q of 0w 40 and all is well to this day..........
that was about three weeks ago.......
I've heard it's normal for these engines to consume some oil......

good luck and keep drivin'

Thank you GB. That's exactly what I'm talking about. During break in, metal particles accumulate in the oil. I guess I'm the one who should be working on cars, not you boost.

^The fact that you think that there is metal particles floating around in the oil after a 1000 miles, on a new car, goes to show your ignorance. What do you think the filter is for? If there is metal particles, from ragged edges (doubtful in the first place) it will occur within the first 50-100 miles, which on engine rebuilds is why you drain it so quickly. How many motors have you put together?

Check Engine Oil At Next Refueling....

3K on the 2012 C63 AMG.... ;-) I got the same message! lol Checked it right away and took care of it. Apparently that's what happens when you drive it like it was designed to be driven?
