Had this issue only once with my wife's MB, there was a few specks of dirt over the sensor portion of the glass.
Wiped it VERY clean, and not an issue.

OK this is funny. I see this thread and think "hmmm what is that?" then realize I posted it myself, like 4.5 years ago.
I have found there are two things that can cause this:
Dirt, just like thesaintusa said, or products like rain-x. They both have the same cure....a dry cloth and just buff the everlovin **** out of it right in front of the sensor.

Auto-wipers on my BMW's have been worse but in general, I hate them.
The best system I had was way back on an old Audi where you had a small wheel that controlled the frequency of intermittent wipers. There was no sensor, you could just choose from like six settings where the wipers wiped every 18sec, 15secs, 12secs etc. You then had the faster settings too, but it was perfect to just choose it based on what my eyes could actually see.

Ok here is the resolution from the dealer, I have not had a chance to try them as it isn't raining but at least they appear to have identified and fixed something.
CAUSE: Incorrect Variant Coding DC-82128818-975
CORRECTION: Performed SCN Coding and Normalization of Rain Light Recognition Sensor.
Will report on how it works next time it rains.

So, lightly raining here today and wipers are no better with whatever they changed.
They are totally fine as long as you don't move the car, just sitting at a light or parked, they cycle like expected and sense the rain properly, seems as soon as I drive and get over 25 or 30 mph or drive for a certain amount of time they will just go on high regardless of the amount of rain hitting the windshield. I don't mean the high setting on intermittent, they go on the fastest setting they can go, I have to turn them to just the low non sensing setting to get them to slow down and low is still wiping to often.
Very frustrating, 6 BMW's and 3 Lexus cars with rain sensing wipers and all of them were 100% better than what this thing is currently doing - guess it is back to the dealer!
Also to make sure it isn't just that they suck by design, went out with my co-working in her 2013 C300 and her wipers work as expected, never go crazy fast in light rain, if anything don't wipe quite enough on the low setting (which makes sense as it is low), so majorly better than how mine work, so having them take another shot at it.

I agree, the implementation of the system is less than ideal - I've just resorted to mocking it and turning off when it goes nuts. I also don't drive in the rain that often so less of an annoyance for me.
Lexus had by far one of the worst implementations a few years ago, to the point that I was happy when my next car just had good old manual wipers. Surprisingly my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the best system AND you could disable the auto wipers if you wanted to.

Ok, update on progress, dealer had car for 2 days, found that the lens in front of the sensor (the part permanently attached to the windshield) was not fully attached or correctly attached to the windshield causing the issues. They are replacing the windshield under warranty to correct the issue, so sounds like good progress!
