Checking Oil Level - different dip sticks

The C63 Manual states that it's normal to use close to 1L of oil every 1000km, specially when new.

I'm checking mine after 700km.

The manual has this picture of the dip stick and states if the level is between mark 2 and 3, the oil is OK

My dispstick is different looking as it has three marks. My level is shown below is at top of mark 2.

Should I add at this point ? Should the oil be at the top mark?

The oil should be between the two top markers.

You're about .5-.75 low

Benz says to let the car sit 5 mins after driving to check the oil level (to let the oil settle off the cams)

Aim for halfway between the two red marks, you don't want to overfill

I would keep an eye on the level as you are doing but you will soon be getting a message "check engine oil level when next refuelling". When I get this message I have added a litre of oil and all good. I have had to do this three times in 15000km of driving.
No point trying to fill right to the top line, as someone else said you don't want to risk overfilling it

I added 1/2L Mobil 1 Formula M 5w-40 (purchased from dealer when I got the car).

1L every 1000km is crazy.

I bet it will slow down. My M3 burned oil too until about 5,000 km and then slowed way down.

I should go check mine now...

You should be measuring oil level when the engine is at running temperature. Oil expands when warm and you probably right on the money once the car is at running temp.

Yes... at 2,800km I'm down to the lower marker... a little higher than your level. I will pick up some oil next week.

I check it about 15 minutes after I park in the garage.

I added 1/2L and now it's about 1/4 way over the second mark.

I carry a a couple of bottles with the spare now to have on hand.

I'll check it regularly.

Note that if you check the oil cold, the dipstick has no oil at all until you retry a couple of times.

Glad it worked out!

Just had it done last week... a little early... but was taking the car in for something else and didn't want to have to go back a second time.

Surprised they didn't check your oil when they serviced LSD

I'm planing oil change at 3k when doing LSD service (BTW, how much was the charge?)

I'm looking where to buy the
Mobil Formula M 5-40 oil by the case locally as dealer charges $11 per L

I checked today, hot hot engine (my break in is advancing and I'm revving to 4500 often) after engine is off for 5 minutes, >>>> oil is totally full.

At top of upper mark (was 1/4 way up from mid mark to upper mark yesterday in the garage after I added 1/2L to a warm engine).

Conclusion: If you check the oil when the car is only warm and not HOT, oil reading is at least 1/2L lower than when very hot.

Check it when it's hot after 5minutes off to get accurate readings.

(a)'12 C63 P/P, LSD, 19" m/spoke,comfort pack. (b)Astra SRI.
Question

Doesn't matter whether you check the oil hot or cold, as long as you know where the hot & cold marks are on the dip stick.
As a matter of interest, has anyone noticed any difficulty/resistance when re-inserting the dip stick?...I find that it goes in a certain distance, then seems to strike some sort of resistance so that I have to use more effort to push it in as far as it will go?
On one occasion, I thought I'd put it back in the wrong way, so had another go..with the same result.
Cheers, Pickles.

Take a look at this "Oil and 156 Motor" thread in the AMG Private Lounge, General Discussion Section.

Very interesting.

3500 Miles on 2012 Non P31

I checked after cold start idling 10 minutes. Oil was ~165F/73C. My oil was at the 2nd tab. And definitely feel resistance on putting it back.

Will take to dealer Friday for a top off! So sounds like I should add 1/2 quart..

Regarding loss of oil, my first non p31 c63 burned a lot and didn't slow down as long as I had it (2 yrs) .Almost 5 quarts between oil changes. My current p31 has needed only one quart after about 11000 miles. None since service A early this year.
