About the engine oil filler cap

Hey guys, a stupid question: how do you unscrew the oil filler cap?

Cuz I found it extremely difficult to open it. Heck, I've tried half an hour and it still stays firmly locked.

Do you use any tools to do this? Or simply by amazing grabbing force? Do you wait until the engine cools down so the fingers don't feel burnt? The coolant cap is easy but I just can't open the oil cap.

Mine was tight but it just took a little muscle... no special tools needed.

I use one of those rubber patches you buy to unscrew tight jar lids.

gthal, JCH, thx for the input. So you let the engine cool down completely before doing that? Since the cap is stupidly low profile and close to the engine housing, I haven't found a way to avoid my fingers kissing and rubbing the engine while trying to muscle the cap.

btw, JCH, where did you buy those rubber mats/pads/patches? I know I know, I'm so not a kitchen guy.

Put on a glove, push down a bit, twist counterclockwise and open it

I usually only check the oil when the engine is cold. You can buy the rubber pads at any grocery or kitchen supply store. As previously mentioned a pair of grippy gloves would work also.

Silly me. After waiting two hours for the engine to cool down to "warm", brutal force simply works, since the temperature is not stopping me from pressing it extremely hard any more.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

W203 slightly modified
When synthetic oil is cold it contracts. If you check it when it's hot it will be the correct reading. Cold oil gives the wrong level.

CAV GT40, 2018 GT R, 2019 GLC 63, 13' Ford Raptor,
I've used a 17mm box wrench many times. Today the damn plastic hex head twisted off leaving a hole for oil to spew out

If you can't remove this cap by hand, you are tightening it wayyyyyyy too tight.
