Something strange happened tonight.

On my way home, I had a spirited drive...car was in S mode with a little bit of paddle shifting. When I shifted to M mode on the fly (at around 60MPH) I was in 4th gear...after a little engine breaking I down shifted into 3rd and gunned it - almost immediately after that, my throttle died and my engine oil temp started flashing -40 (prior to the throttle dying I was at 231) and then a few seconds later I lost the oil temp reading altogether (display read ---)

About a second or two after I lost throttle response, it came right back and I put the car in C mode and started nanny driving. I cycled through C,S,M and played with the paddles at every mode - they worked perfectly. The transmission shifted smoothly the rest of the way home. There were no icons lit up on my instrument cluster, no service messages or anything else that popped up.

Once I arrived home, I shut the car off and immediately heard what appeared to be the auxiliary fan (which i believe cools off the tranny?) The engine oil temp gauge still read --- but this time, the yellow engine oil icon lit up on my dash.

I shut the car back off and the auxiliary fan was still running. After about 2 minutes, it shut off. i turned the car back on for a third time, still no engine oil temp reading, the engine oil icon was lit up and the auxiliary fan turned back on.

I'm at a loss as to what happened...this doesn't sound like the dead throttle issue that's been discussed at length on this forum before. It was also pretty cool outside (70F) so I don't see how the car could have overheated after 10 minutes of spirited driving on a cool spring night.

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? I wonder if it's just a bad oil temp sensor that went dead causing the car to go into an immediate temporary limp mode.

I'm going to see what happens when I start the car up in the morning but any thoughts or input anyone can share would be appreciated. This is pretty disconcerting as I'm not afraid to get on my car...considering this happened under such tame conditions, I wouldn't want to risk this happening at the track or drag strip at triple digit speeds.

I've attached two pics below of the instrument cluster; the first is immediately after throttle came back which is at 2:05am. The second was taken at 2:10am after I got home and restarted the car (you'll see the yellow engine oil icon now lit.)

May be a software or sensor issue, better take it in for a check up.

The yellow icon is a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) or Service Engine Icon not an engine oil icon. You have some error codes. You need to have them read to determine if you need service.

The fan that was running is for the Auxiliary Oil Cooler for the engine oil and not the transmission cooler. Your sudden transmission shifts may have overheated the engine oil and or transmission fluid or just confused the electronics.

Thanks for the insight. I just dropped my car off at my mechanic. He has a great relationship with my local MB dealer so he's going to scan it today since the dealer is closed.

He suspects my oil temp sensor is shot...but I should find out soon enough.

So my mechanic told me that all both cams threw error codes. I'm concerned that this may be related to the M156 class action suit that's been discussed ad nauseum here (my car is an 09)...it could also be faulty sensors but I won't know for sure until it gets to the dealer tomorrow.

Whatever the issue is, I sincerely hope it will be covered under warranty...I will update this thread with more info as I get it.

I spoke to the tech working on my car and he said that a pulley tensioner and belt had gone bad, snapped and severed a wire connected to the cam sensor. Apparently, this through everthing out of wack but he said he is 100% sure this was the issue.

Fortunately, everything is being fixed and replaced under warranty.

Me too, I was afraid it might be something more serious that they'd try to tie back to my tune...

So I got some bad news from the dealer last night: the wire that was damaged caused multiple shorts in the harness, grounding was bad and apparently did damage to my ECU. They are now saying I must replace my ECU... and because my ECU is flashed, they will not cover the cost of replacement ECU.

Suffice to say I am pretty pissed off because the damage to my ecu was caused by something completely unrelated but just by virtue of having my tune, I'm screwed. I'm pretty sure the tech isn't bullsh*tting me because he is a friend of my friend and mechanic. Now I'm faced with a bill that will most likely exceed $2K for a new ECU plus diagnostics and labor.

I was contemplating sending my ECU out to www.ecudoctors.com as they seem pretty thorough and offer a 5 year warranty on their work.

Should I attempt to repair my ECU before ordering a new one? Should i order a new one and attempt to repair my old one with the tune file on it?

Any suggestions from you guys would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear that but can't you try to contact your tuner, revert your ECU to stock and then take it back for warranty since you know someone that works at the dealership ?

There is a seal that was cracked when the ecu was opened - as soon as the dealer sees this, the jig is up. Even if I flashed back to stock, it wouldn't matter.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck BK, that sucks big time. I would give them hell cuz as you said, the ECU got damaged from the belt/wiring... nothing to do with the tune.

I'm hoping that this is repairable...going to send back to Jerry@Eurocharged so that he can analyze and hopefully help resolve this...my fingers are crossed...

Update*

Jerry@Eurocharged said he got my ECU back up and running. It appears like it was some kind of a software issue - though I haven't had a chance to speak with him to discuss the specifics. (Jerry if you see this, please give me a call/email/PM or chime in here...)

He said he reset the module, reflashed the ecu and cleared all error codes thru STAR. I should have my ECU back today...the moment of truth will come when I plug it back in and fire her up.

Fingers crossed...

**Update
My ECU has arrived at my house...anxious to get home and plug it back. Definitely leaving the office early today...
