roof rack trim piece peeling...

for those of you still within warranty... you might want to check the trim piece that runs along between the door and the roof... it's where those roof rack slots are...

you may see signs of peeling... i had this issue come up on my 2009 and had it replaced under warranty

does this look like there is a clear coat on the trim that is beginning to lift at the edges??

yep... some of it is barely noticeable... but the drivers side looks bad

not sure what the cause is... possibly the heat in texas?

Thanks. Mine not even close to looking like yours at this point - it is a bit like a protective film has not been trimmed back neatly in a few points - but it is not receding back from the edges of the trim. Not hard to imagine it ending up like it down the track, by which time I am sure the warranty will be long gone.

As an aside I had the rubber seal around the sunroof go bad quite early on - it almost looked like it had perished in places. The dealer replaced it no questions asked. Maybe this and the trim you refer to are adversely affected by hot sun, but you also need to consider it could be from some cleaning product (or technique)?? But then why would the dealer replace without a fuss, suggesting it is a materials fault?

I asked my local body shop about this while I'm getting some repairs done. He said it's just a shortcut that MB took. You could repair it, but in a couple of years, it would happen again. He recommended painting over it.

Yup. Mine has a little chipping in one area so I asked my body shop guy about it. He works on probably 15-20 Mercs a month. Most of them probably from local dealerships including MB Walnut Creek.

On a completely different note, he said that the bumpers on the SLS are too stiff. In the first couple of months they were sold, he had 4 come in for shattered bumpers because they didn't have as much give as typical MB bumpers.

I'm having the same issue, car is out of warranty so i guess I'll have to remove and fix them myself, 200$+ for each is a ripoff. Does anyone know how to remove them?

your mom
Its a big time rip off.

My dealer quoted me $573 to replace ONE trip piece on the GL450 - which just stepped out of factory warranty into Certified Pre Owned Warranty.

$573 for feet of plastic with clear coat? Yuck.
