Why do the brake pads have these round/squre weights on the ends?

Why do the brake pads have these round/squre weights on the ends?

Have you seen the C63 brake pads (Performance Pack in my case). The front pads have these twin round weights at either end. The rear have a square set of weights on each end.

Aftermarket track replacement pads don't have them.

What are they for? What do they contribute?

They re a Harmonic Dampener. Helps reduce vibration and squealing>>>
