Question Steering Wheel Shudder (at a stop)

I've only had my car for a month and a half, and only have about a month and a half of full warranty left (before CPO kicks in). My point is I'm new to the car, but it has 48K on the odo.

Anyway, I recently discovered that when I turn the steering wheel from far left to far right (or vice versa) I get some significant steering wheel shudder or shimmy towards the end of the steering wheel motion. I notice this naturally driving when I back out of a parking spot, and need to swing the wheels around to drive straight after backing out.

Testing this I noticed it at a stand still, and it happens pretty much every time. Is this normal? Does everyone notice this? If so, then I'm less concerned. If no one else has this happen then I'll need to ask the dealer to check it out while I still have 100% coverage.

Thoughts?

Could it just be tire friction?

I thought it may be, but it happens on many surfaces and just doesn't seem natural. Never observed it so consistently with any other car prior. Maybe I'll go to the dealer and ask to take a look at their CPO '09 C63 and compare.

Out of curiosity, what kind and size tires are you running at the front?

I get the same issue on mine. Mine is a 2009 C63.

I bought it used also, so I don't know if this is normal or not.

Maybe someone else can chime in?

Can it be the rotors?

It happens when you do full lock at a stop or slow roll.

Say when I pull out the driveway and turn it full lock, it starts shaking...then I straighten it out, it becomes normal.

For my car, the rotors just passed the CPO inspection, so I don't think it would be past a point that needed to be replaced, and left on the vehicle. Pads were replaced.

I notice this without the brakes being applied as well.

Sounds like power steering possibly? Do your rpm's fluctuate when you do it?

Mine also does this, I assume it is tire friction.

Seems to have happened with all my cars too...judder at full lock. I agree with the tire friction theory.

I think that when you reach the end of the travel in the steering (full lock) there is a high pressure building up in the power steering system. The system has a pressure relief valve that opens when the pressure builds past a set limit. I think it is the pressure relief valve opening that you are hearing. It is very hard on the power steering system to push it past this point and as soon as you hear a shudder in he system you should back off the steering a little. At that mileage on your car your power steering pump may be wearing out and not capable of operating at full capacity. I would have it inspected by the dealer and see what they think. The power steering pump may need to be replaced.

We'll, see... it's at the dealer today for some other items, so I threw that into the mix.

I'll let you know what they come back with (probably just "no issues found").

09 c class has a recall to check p/s pump ask dealer if your vin is included also the bolts that fasten the hoses to the rack are prone to leak and may need to be re torqued

Thanks. The dealer reportedly could not duplicate the issue, but did check and confirm no leaks were found and p/s fluid level was fine.

I'll keep an eye on it, and if it continues to seem "wrong" bring it back in, and demonstrate the issue. I just have about 1.75 months to do it with the factory warranty! Not sure the CPO would cover the issue.

reviving an old thread here, but any updates or can you shared what happened? This happened to my 2011 and dealer couldn't recreate the issue.

2010 C63 AMG, 2011 Mini Cooper (work)
I remember reading somewhere that the 2011-2008 have an issue with one of the bolts to a strut arm or steering knuckle (i forget what it was) but theres suppose to be two bolts but one falls out in our early model cars and is like a stupid issue. I dunno it happens to my car on the right side and I think about it all the time. Like that car is going over some lump in the steel and drops back down.
