Dealer asking for $180 for new iPhone cable hookup

Getting the b3 service done on the car and asked about a new cable hookup for my iPhone. Now the iPhone 5 is coming out soon so I dunno if the $180 set up is worth it?

Dealer is Mercedes-Benz of Tyson in VA. Thanks

Don't worry, there will be an adapter for the old connector to whatever the iPhone 5 will have.

Why get a new cable? just get the adapter if you want to charge.

I don't think a new cable allows that. It will continue to play it in shuffle mode like it does now. Right??

Buy the cable at $50 from the dealer (2010 and up version), go to any sound shop they'll install it for you for $40-$50.

If you plan on getting the iphone 5 (which is still just a rumour, worst kept secret mind you, but nothing official announced, so it is a rumour), wait till it has been released.

Apple has this tendency to screw with things royally, specifically accessories. Hell, if apple had it their way, even iphone cases would require a chip in them to verify authenticity :P

That being said, if there is any logic required for the sync cable, there is no way to know if an adapter will work, or whether a new cable is required.

I use that adapter I linked. It works just like not having the adapter but actually charges the phone now.

Does a cable in fact change the ability to function with the iphone for the better? Has anyone upgraded their cable and seen any difference besides the ability to charge the newer devices?

I have the new cable and no difference with it or the SCOSCHE adapter that I used to use.

Even if Apple makes a new dock connector, companies will be making adapters for it. Like this mock up. So don't worry.

The iPhone 5 will have a new dock connector - I'd wait a few months extra for an adapter-less solution.

Ok,

so the dealer explained to me that my old connector should work on my dash - meaning that i should be able to scroll through my music on from the dash but not from the navi screen. this new cable enables you to choose your music from the screen.

the old connection I had did not even work, so mine was covered by warranty (hooray!).

On 2009 C63s, a new cable will not magically let you scroll through songs/playlists on the screen. Your dealer is wrong.

The 2010's were updated with a new COMAND that had the on screen iPod functionality.

I wonder where he got that information? that's just silly as the command does not have the capability to integrate with the iphone as it runs off Auxiliary which carries audio only. Glad you got it under warranty, as it's not an approved warranty procedure. They must have knew they screwed up and cheated the system saying yours was malfunctioning. Also you can buy a MB OEM adapter

iPod / iPhone 5V Adapter - B6 782 4582

This will give you the same charging function, similar to the scosche product listed above. I would not buy their scosche products though, I use to in the past but their products are cheap and buggy.
