Opinions on Length of Time Without Starting Engine.

Wanted to know opinions on days or weeks without starting car. I usually drive it once a week, but sometimes I miss a week and it stays untouched for up to 2 weeks. Wondering of potential damage I am doing to it. Ease my worries, friends!

The engine will be seriously damaged if you don't start the car at least once a week.
I would mark it on the calendar when You start the car so You can keep track.

Ah, thanks. Bad news. I've gone through a few times where I didn't start the car for about 10-14 days since ownership. This is not good news. I now have an excuse to dyno it again.

Also would like to know where you got the one week recommendation. Its not just about starting it, it's about driving it as well (flat spots). I would think it takes way more than a week to have any kind of negative effects on the drivetrain or the tires...

I'm pretty sure it takes longer for tires to get flat spots. But the engine's lubrication might become dry. The longer it goes without starting the rougher the start. I understand, but hopefully every two weeks or less is ok...

Most understand why you need to start periodically....I get that...the question is how that particular poster came to recommend once a week. Is it an arbitrary internet recommendation, or is there some relevant background?

These cars sit for longer than a week without running before they even make it to your dealer.

I've let my car go as long as six weeks without running in the winter. Fired right up no problem. I was worried about the battery but that wasn't a problem either.

Just make sure you let it idle for a while after starting it to make sure the oil is well circulated before you give it too many revs. If it is cold when you fire it up don't wait too long as you want the transimission to warm up at the same time as well.

Also make sure your tires are well inflated and it will reduce the risk of flat spotting. I didnt' have any flat spotting on my winter tires after 6 weeks of sitting.

After 2.5 weeks of sitting I will sometimes here a ticking noise coming from the engine. I've been told that it is just the engine getting oil running through it again.

Otherwise I've had no problems with it. I am more worried about storing it for the winter. I have been told many conflicting statements about how you should start it and let it run at least once a week to I should just let it sit for the winter and start it back up again in the spring.

Good info here as I only use my car once a week too.

As for winter storage, i've talked to the AMG instructors during the AMG performance tour & they recommend starting it once a week or two weeks vs letting it sit all winter long.

Leaning towards the Vorsteiner Diffuser. You said easy to install, correct? Any poking holes or cutting? Or just bolt on?

I usually go 2 to sometimes 3 weeks without driving it. I agree about starting it weekly otherwise you'll valves ticking from the bleed down. I'd rather have them nicely lubed up.

I travel a lot for work and frequently gone for 2-3 weeks. When I asked the MB tech he said no your car sitting around doesn't hurt it as long as its garaged and not sitting out in the elements. He also said simply allow it 3-4 minutes warm up if you let it sit longer then two weeks.

Umm...I got the sarcasm...

Anyway, you will probably be fine for a few weeks. But make sure if you do start it, let it run until the fluids come up to temp (stops blinking on your dash). Otherwise, the oil isn't getting hot enough to lubricate the engine and it's just metal on metal until that point.

This is the rule I use on my Ducati, but I have that connected to a tender so I'm not worried about it. Also, a bike is super easy to move without turning it on to avoid flat spots.

Every car I've owned sits for upwards of 2-3 months at a time un-driven. I work a 2 month on 2 month off schedule and my wife does not want to drive my cars....Never had a problem with any and she just starts them up and runs them up to temp every 2nd week or so...this includes 997 turbo, 911cs, Aston v8v, NSX, etc...I just pump the tires up to 50 psi or so to help with flat spots and cover it up with battery tender on.

I was always told get a battery tender if you are going to be gone for a long time.

And that actually starting the car and not driving it is bad for the engine, since the oil unevenly heats up and doesn't circulate as well. I think in the manual it says not to let the car sit and warm up but to drive it and let it warm up. (I know my old porsche manual says that)

Yes and no. I just took it off the road and stored it. It might come out to play this fall but the cool weather will beg me to mess with the vette. I got my drag setup ready to go.

I thought about trading it in for a CTS V but I just couldn't do it. The dealer low balled me and it felt like a 4 door of what I already owned. I think the GTR is next.

I would recommend a tender if you're not running the car at least once every two weeks and going for a drive. That's what I do for my bike.
