Is this normal???
I have an 08 E63 AMG. In sport or comfort mode the transmission engine brakes all the time. It downshifts pretty harsh. Harsh enough that it makes modulating the brake pedal difficult. It's hard to explain, but it acts like as soon as the rpm is low enough to downshift safely, it does, everytime. I've never owned a MB before. Is this normal? Is there a trans issue? I don't mind it when I'm playing on a curvy road, but when I'm driving around town with the little lady, it's kind of annoying. Thanks for any input! This is my first post. Thanks everybody.

The previous owner probably drove it hard and the TCU learned their shifting habits. You can just re-teach the TCU by babying it around for a while or try to reset the TCU (you'd have to look up how to do that).

It's hard to know what exactly you feel, but the C63 has far more driveline drag than any car I have owned. This is a feature I do not like and must play a role in the poor gas mileage. But of course no one should buy in if this is a concern. We live at 2000 ft and the car's adaptive function puts and holds the car in a lower gear in descent which is appreciated, but I would rather wear out the brakes than even think about the transmission. To me the "normal " drag almost always makes me think the e-brake is on.

I stopped by the dealer and let the service manager drive it. He said that the engine braking was normal with the E63. Just seems a bit excessive to me. Drives a lot like my Denali truck in tow/haul. I'm sure I will get used to it. Thanks

I would have to agree this is normal, well at least in sport mode it is but it shouldn't be doing that in comfort mode. I don't like using sport mode for this reason, don't get me wrong we all love the sound of down shifts but not to the extreme in which sport mode takes it to sometimes. lol
I would recommend resetting the tcu here is the link how to.
