I just went to the body shop that my dealer uses (happens to be an MB Porsche Body shop) and asked for some paint, they had left over from a previous mix when working on another car of the same colour as mine (steel grey), and just put some in a bottle and gave it to me

Oddly neither the factory or the Dr Colorchip touchup paint was a particularly good match on my 040 once I applied it to chips. I ended up buying a non-Merc color from Pep Boys that worked better. YMMV, but I found that a blacker shade than the OE black worked better on touchups.

i think it comes with clear coat...or at least you can buy a little clear coat with it.
does anyone have a diy or something of how to use it though? i tried once when i was a lot younger and had no idea what i was doing lol. i have a couple rock chips on my hood i'd like to take care of without paying someone to do it for me.

basically, don't bother trying to use the brush-in-cap ... use a toothpick instead.

Many new paints are once over with built in clear coat, not sure about the MB stuff though. As a previous poster noted, use a toothpick, not a brush, fill the chipped in area as best as possible, (rather have a bump then an indentation), let it dry (times will vary based on weather, temp, and paint), then use medium and finishing polishes.
Option two, would be to fill the area in and leave a slight indentation, then fill the remaining with clearcoat till its a slight bump, finish with medium and finishing polishes, seal/wax/whtatever else you want to do.
