It's definitely static. One thing I can suggest is to Opti Coat your car which will help it repel dust rather then attract it. What area are you in and I can recommend an installer.

Wes, how did you keep the rotors so rust-free during the car cleaning process? that is a huge problem with this car and i have a process to prevent this for vehicles but it's a bit annoying. i was considering trying that Hyde's Serum stuff that you spray on the rotors just to see if it makes my life a bit easier but i haven't pulled the trigger just yet.
i see some of you have mentioned OPT coating. i wish more people adopted OPT's products. it's all i use on my car and it makes my life SO much easier. obviously the coating is the number one time saver.
corrected with the Hyper twins and coated with Opti-Guard (now called Opti-Coat Pro), tires get OPT Tire Shine, interior sees Opti-Clean or Protectant, depends on the surface. exterior gets Opti-Clean, Instant Detailer, No Rinse Wash/Wax OR OPT shampoo...it just depends on what's happening...or Power Clean for the wheels/tires/wells. windshield has Opti-Glass Pro and is kept up with Clean/Protect OR Instant Detailer.
the only non-OPT products that i use on my car are Meguiars professional glass cleaner for the inside of the windows (you basically get 11 gallons of cleaner for $15 bucks so my wife uses it too for the house) and Meguiars Hyper Dressing diluted to i think 4:1 for the front wells. sometimes i have to use Maxx Solv for things here and there that won't come off easily but that's about it.
one thing that is weird/interesting for these cars is some of them use ceramic clear coat and while it offers superior protection vs. a lot of things, the hardest part of the clear is only ~.2 mil!!!! that means you have to be careful if you are going after deeper defects because after that .2 mil it's super soft clear for the remainder of what's there. that shouldn't be a problem if you are coating since the coating will get you some abrasion resistance back, especially with a high film build product like the Pro version of Opti-Coat...but still.

I love OPT products too but have a broad range of over things I like to use as well.
From what I've seen the thickness is pretty standard for most oem cars so its ok.

when they spray it, the ceramic attributes are uniform throughout, but when it cures, the hard stuff goes to the surface. so when you break through that hard ~.2 mil surface, you end up with a relatively soft clear for the remainder of the clear coat that is left.

First off Happy New Year!
I started the year off Opti Coating this Juke Nismo. To be honest this is a love it or hate it car and I actually really like it! Not a full write up due to time constraints but I couldn't have it in my shop and not snap some pics!
Measuring the paint
Polishing
Opti Coat Pro
And the finished product
Hope you enjoyed the pics and all the best in 2014!

Nice one Wes, that 1M in the background caught my eye. My car could use your help too, I haven't washed it since the last time you detailed it a couple months back...

Beautiful. The e39 is my favorite M5, especially in that color.

Just Opti Coated this 507 which was a pretty brand new car. There were some very light swirls that needed to be polished out but with the color being silver my camera couldn't get a good before and after. Regardless I couldn't have a 507 in the shop and not take pics.

Very nice gloss!
And a quick shot before she leaves
Lol I can't believe it's April here in Toronto and it is covered in snow. Especially when I was in a t shirt yesterday.
