DIY: Remove oem spoiler
I received my mode carbon rear spoiler with the last group buy and subsequently found there is no proper DIY thread on how to remove the oem spoiler. So here we go! While there may be other ways to do this, these are the steps I took and the tools I used to do it.
1) Get yourself a heat gun, I got this off amazon. Starting from the drivers side of the car heat the spoiler from underneath and only about 4 inch sections at a time. I used the high setting and kept the heat gun moving, don't stay in one place too long. Feel the trunk and when it's hot to touch move to the next step.
2) Get some fishing line >10lb (others mention dental floss but I found it to constantly snap, its just not strong enough). With the fishing line slide it between the spoiler and trunk and with your leather gloves on (important if you like your fingers!) slide through the heated portion in a sawing motion.
3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you get through the entire spoiler and remove the spoiler. Be patient, the above steps are going to take you at least 30-45 minutes.
4) Now the next step can be done in a couple of ways. You can use your fingers and slowly rub off the adhesive residue or you can get yourself a , otherwise known as an eraser wheel. If you're going to do this DIY I would recommend ordering one before you get started. I searched and searched to buy one of these locally and they are hard to find. A few O'reilly's and carquests may have some in stock and also check auto body supply stores if you dont want to order online.
This was the first time I used this tool but its freaking awesome, makes the job so much easier. I'll never do it another way again.
5) After the bulk of the adhesive tape is removed, get some goo gone or lighter fluid and clean up the residual gunk.
6) Finally test fit your shiny new spoiler and install!

nice write up, I used a fish line as well. Didn't have a heatgun, so the process was alil longer.
Also used the strip off wheel and goo gone to get the remaining residue off.

wish i would have thought of wearing my motorcycle gloves when i did this haha. my hands were hurting, but i kept trying to push through this.
also, i didn't have a heat gun and didn't feel like ordering one so i used a couple of blow dryers that i had at home. maybe not as effective, but still got the job done.

I really wish I had known about this eraser wheel when I did mine. Taking the spoiler off took about 15 mins with two of us working (1 heating while the other moved the fishing line through). Taking off the adhesive took about 2 hours and a variety of different substances until one finally worked.
Great write up!

2009 C63,
Great write up ! Now I can do mine with more confidence with this wheel. Now, in order to get the best adhesion, is the mode carbon 3M double sided tape the best one available?

my wife bananas! :D
yes, it is really good tape. I was the first one on the boards to install their spoiler last year.... and the spoiler is still doing well. Lasted through the rain, speed, snow, salt, the odd carwash... everything

Same here when i did mine. Didn't use any gloves nor eraser nor heatgun. So it was a pain to get the job done

That 3m wheel is a godsend for getting rid of all the gunk. I don't see why you can't use it on matte paint. Its clear coat safe as far as I know
