C63 Black Series - smoke on startup after dealer service..
Hey guys,
I bought the car from a private party with around 300 miles on it. It's now over 6,000 and has been running great. I brought it in for it's first service last week to a local dealer and since then it's had blue oil smoke on startup and before it gets completely warmed up it idles pretty rough (compared to before the service).
Anyone else had this experience before? I'm going to get ahold of the dealer on Monday but was curious what other peoples experience was (i've searched the forum but haven't found any references to other black series' doing this).
I have a 997 Turbo which also occasionally smokes on startup (which is normal for those). However, this is bothering me as it didn't do this before the service and it has been my daily driver since I purchased it. I haven't even driven it hard as I'm normally racing sports cars on the weekends and drive pretty mellow on the street.
Thanks for any input!

Mike,
I can't speak for the BS, but my last C63 loved to smoke at start up and do the exact same thing you are talking about. My current C63 has only smoked on start up once (6k miles), so I have no idea what the deal is with the M156.
I know there was another member on here that owns a C63BS that bought the Weistec Air/Oil Separator because at 2000 miles/kms (not sure which one) his car started burning a fair bit of oil. Just a thought.
edit - I think the C63BS owner was NORTH 44 C63. PM him.

A few people seem to have had "smoke issues" with their M156 on start up.
It has happened to me on a couple of occasions...but only after the following circumstance: If I go for a reasonable drive, & drive it straight into the garage, when I NEXT start it up, next day etc, there will be no smoke. But, if after my normal drive I park the car in the driveway, then a few hours later, start it up & drive it into the garage, the NEXT time I start it, is when I've seen some smoke. I don't know why....the car doesn't use oil, & under acceleration, engine braking etc etc...there is no smoke at all.
A few others have seen smoke in this scenario.
Cheers, Pickles.

I would take it back and talk to the dealer and ask why this is just now happening after a service. Blue smoke = burning oil which is no good

Check your oil level. The dealer may have overfilled it. If there is too much oil in the sump the car will run rough with the crank journals running through the oil I think. Not good for the engine.

^ That issue seems to be more common than it should be.

Common issue with the C63BS (and most M156 engines) . Mine did it intermittently and especially after parked on an incline, nose up..
Solution:
http://www.weistec.com/m156os.html
Issue 99% gone. Only seen it happen again once in 30,000klm since the O/S was installed

IDK, I just started mine up after having sat for 6 months. Cranked right up after turning over only a few extra times. No smoke, just a bit of lifter noise, that went away after some driving.

I think switching to a higher viscosity oil helps. What oil are you running on? I use to run 0w40 Mobil1 and had that smoking exhaust pipe problem, but since switching to 10w40 Redline the problem never happened.

It was the mobil1 to redline that solved your problem. Not the viscosity.

Also, or those running Weistec oil/air separator reported problem fixed, so I'm assuming the extra oil that is caught did not get burned off in the exhaust.
I'm an NOT a mechanic and don't pretend to be one, but sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one. Can anyone chime in on this?

Thanks guys! It looks like Mort was correct.
I checked the oil this morning and it's *way* over-filled. I'm debating bringing it back to the dealer or just saying screw it and doing it myself. If I owned the dealer I'd want to know we screwed up, but I doubt they'll really give a damn and I'd probably just end up yelling at someone who can't do anything anyway.
There was oil spilled all over the top of the motor as well. I'm the first to appreciate expediency, but you still have to do a good job. $500 motor/diff oil change.. what a waste.

What a bunch of idiots. I'd snap on them. How hard is into change the oil??
Overfilling is Hard on the engine, it creates a lot of extra pressure in the crank case.
I just took apart my intake manifold and I'm glad I got the catch can, tons of oil residue in the intake.

I'm super **** about oil changes. I know the dealers suck the oil out (instead of draining) and it leaves about one quart in the oil cooler that can't be sucked out. Then the dealers add too much oil because they go by the specs for a full oil change. Dumb asses do it all of the time. I always tell them to put in 7.5 quarts and give me a bottle to top off myself later. And I always check the oil level before I leave the dealership. I've read too many of these posts over the years
