How Important is Tire Matching??
Reason I ask is the stock ContiContac3 that my car came with are now a discontinued model, and replaced with the Contac5.
Most of you know that old gag, the rears are smoked and the front have 70+% remaining (hey I just bought the car, had to test out it's performance levels ).
So wondering how wonky things could/would get if I just ran a a set of the Contac5 in the back end with the stock 3's up front? Maybe no difference at all noticed? Would stay same size as stockers..
Thoughts?

Sweet, didn't think it would make much of a difference, not like the old days when someone would run radials and bias plys together lol.
Thanks for the responses!

It's only important to the tire manufacturers who know that in most high performance situations, rears wear out alot quicker than fronts and its a great urban legend to force you to stick with a brand.
The only other situation is on a lease return, they often will penalize you, for the sake of squeezing every last penny out of you, if you don't have a matching set

I have been running Conti's in the front and PSS in the rear for a few months now. No issues and rather happy. I sometimes notice from a far that the tires look different but no big deal to me. Plus I eventually plan to match the fronts with PSS tires once they wear down if that ever happens.

i felt the same way. i stopped buying continental 5P's after the rears went the first time. the fronts have lasted for 20k miles. i just did my 3rd rear replacement in april.

I even went to the track with all seasons on the rear and decent tires on the front. I was half a second slower than the RE11's.. A little more tail happy, but nothing crazy.

edit: just did a quick search on here and it sounds like the re11's don't last long.

I stalk the local Craigslist for pairs of rear tires with life in em. Go thru em way to hella fast to be at the tire store all the time. Not only that but here in Canada a StarSpec will set you back $415. My backs rarely match my fronts.
"Smoke em if you got em" takes on a whole new meaning to an AMG owner.

I've had very good experiences with Pontenza tires in my old street/race cars and I might go that route when these are fully worn.
