Oil Temperature rising very fast!
I live up north in canada where the weather is not that warm!! On an average day its like 17-22 Celcius. I would say the car is pretty stable at 102Celcius when just cruising around.. But then as soon as I switch to sport or manual mode and I run it a bit, not that much!!! Within 3-5 minutes I am up to 120C, before 10 minutes I cross the 130C.
It can be like on highway just being in 3rd gear for some time at 6000rpm.. Or doing a few launch and twisties. I've had it to 133C and I believe I went into the Limp Home Mode. (As far as I can tell)
So far, I looked at the shroud and the fan, for some reason the shroud was not bolted to the fan assembly. This has been corrected. I also believe I may be a bit low on oil. I am about 2000km before my next change and it may miss about 1/2 to 3/4 of a pint of oil.
Is there anything else we can do to keep that temperature well below 120? I feel this may become a more serious problem!!
Thanks!

If your oil got to 130C or 260+f it's thrashed. I would change it asap. Even synth isn't rated for that temp. Have the tech pull DTC's when it goes it. You might have a faulty oil temp sensor, fan speed sensor or bad oil cooler. Either way don't wait to change your oil.

I was at the dealer about 5 days ago for warranty issues and they checked everything on the DTC download all codes. There was one Lean on Bank 1 that occured when then engine shutdown once. The code was stored and not current. There was nothing else to report from the diagnostic computer.
Do you know at what temperature the Fan is supposed to kick in? I just didn't ever notice any noises coming from the Fan. Maybe just a loose cable that prevent the fan from properly starting!
How would one test the termostat or sensor for proper operation?
Thanks!

Found the culprit! The fan never ever start on the oil cooler! Suspect faulty wire harness! Will have to take it apart to test it. This explain why after only a few minutes of spirited driving my temperature was off the roof. I exited the car while the temp was about 126C and the fan was not even turning. Took a slow ride home to cool down the temperature to operating range of about 100C.! Thanks !!

Final installment! Fuse F89 in the trunk was blown! Well all good now!! Fan starts at 107C and it keeps it down! Was a PITA to find the correct FUSE, there is like 3 differents diagrams with before and after date!
Thanks a lot!!
Thanks a lot!!

I do not know how it is over there, but in the United States the Manufacturer would have to prove the problem is caused by the oil and still further, not due to another failure. The Royal Purple oil meets and exceeds all the specs mandated by MB for their cars. Try finding the Castrol TWS if you can and use that.

Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oil provides outstanding high-temperature protection and is proven to protect at engine temperatures up to 500°F. In fact, Mobil 1 synthetic oil provides superior performance versus our other full synthetic and conventional oils when tested for high-temperature deposit formation, as seen below. (then there is a graph)......
Anyway isn't the oil temp limp mode point like 270f or so??? It is really REALLY easy for my temps to be in the 230's doing pretty normal driving here in Phoenix.....I can't imagine 260 is the "ruined point".....Or that I am usually only 30*f or so away from it!!!!

My car is today to MB Luxembourg, they will maybe change the oil for the same as in the SLR and they propose to order the 507 bonnets but this will change maybe 10 degres maximum...... so 140 or 130 :-(
maybe this different oil will change something...????

Mobil 1's data is likely under very short burst and not a sustained temperature. Considering that synth oils start to flash off at 230+/- deg f they are starting to break down. There is a very fine line between the oil being ok and when it starts to deteriorate. Oil is cheap. An engine is not.
You can go into any dealership and ask any master tech if eot's higher than 220-25 under heavy load is normal and they will unanimously so NO. Hell, I gross 26,000lb with my F450 pulling hills and I dont see temps that high.
Not trying to get into an argument, but in real world conditions I would be getting nervous if my my eot's got that high after a little spirited driving. At 260 my oil would be out.

There is no way your car is safe operating at such oil temps. The oil has simply lost its ability to handle shear loads and has broken down to the point of creating more heat. HEAT IS A MEASURE OF FRICTION created by the operation of your engine. If your engine is operating without lubricity problems, then your oil temps would not be so high.
FIX the problem by replacing the oil with QUALITY oil... do not band-aid the fix by adding a larger cooler to dissipate more heat so you FEEL the engine is running better. Doing this is like taking pain medicine so you do not feel the pain instead of fixing the source of the ache.
Just in case you did not see this video... Watch how fast the oil temps recover and this is racing at elevated sustained RPMs.

So, after few letter to mercedes Luxembourg, they will put the Black series oil cooler on my car up garantie and make a spécial price for the bonnet with scoop!
