PICS: Spirit of AMG - Off-road AMG Event in Affalterbach
So, thanks to a friend of mine I was able to take part in an off-road AMG event.
Took the flight from Warsaw to Stuttgart on Wednesday.
The next day we went for a visit to the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, 30 minuts away from Stuttgart.
We experienced a very warm welcome and really enjoyed the tour.
The best part for me personally was the moment when I met the father of my car's engine - Matthias Wollner. He was very proud to hear that my car's motor has run 155'000km without mechanical issues. BTW Matthias was promoted to the group leader of V12 engine mechanics so I assume I am lucky to have his signature under my hood. As for the engine assembly line, I have never seen anything like it. It is the most sterile and precise garage you can imagine.
We also visited the Performance Studio where a few G63s, C63s, A45s, and CLS63s were getting custom interiors and other accents. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures there.
On to the OFF-ROAD EVENT:
We had the following cars to our disposal:
- 2x G63 AMG
- 2x G65 AMG
- the new GL63 AMG
- 2x ML63 AMG
First we took the cars on a 1 hour highway drive. We exchanged cars so we could feel the differences between them.
Afterwards, we got to the off-road track where we were divided into two groups - a G-wagon group and a GL/ML group.
Of course the ML/GL track was much easier than the G-wagon one. The pictures speak for themselves.
As a summary, I can say the following: the G65 was the worst car of all. It lacked sound, low-end torque and felt like a truck on the highway (the steering is horrible).
The ML63 was ok, didn't blow my mind, unlike the GL63 which is UNBELIEVABLY good.
The looks, the steering, the power, the sound, the interior, the Bang&Olufsen sound system, the seats, the comfort are off this planet.
All in all it was cool to meet the person responsible for my every-morning grins after pressing the start button. The cars were impressive, so was the AMG HQ. But the event itself lacked adrenaline which I was looking for.
Now enjoy the pics

looks fun! I've always wanted to go offroading...wonder why the G65 is the worst when the G63 is awesome? I thought a G65 is just a more powerful (and hence more awesome) version of the G63...other than the sound I can see the 65 being more quiet

It was definitely something new and a will be a great memory.
Also from what the instructors said, I think this off-road event will not be offerred any more due to the damage costs.
They said that a previous group damaged 3 G63s on a steep descent because they were too close to each other.
The only damage we caused were bent exhaust tips on the G65 and G63
The GL63 is awesome (the white one).
The G63 and G65 were great off-road but rubbish on the road. The car doesn't react to the movements of the steering wheel until you reach a quarter of a turn.
The G65 is queit, you don't feel the accelaration and seems weaker at the low end band of rpms. The G63 has a nice sound and takes off from about 2000rpms. The G65 is definitely not worth the money - it only has status/show-off value.
As for the GL63, best car I've driven in the last 4 years. Simply amazing.
Thanks Brad
Anthony, after we were done off-roading they said we were heading to the AMG factory to clean the cars but they didn't let us do it in the end haha.

Thx for sharing your experience Matt, must have been a great event lke all the AMG events.
I'm really not feeling the new direction MB is going with the new AMG cars... the ML63 lacks aggressiveness in term of appearance. I much prefer the old model with the fender flares & lower stance. I'm also not feeling the new E63 front bumper.

Yeah I know, I wanted to drive it but the instructors were not kind enough to pass me the keys.
The ML63 is not my cup of tea at all. The GL on the other hand is beautiful from every angle.
As for the E-class, the front bumper looks like it came from the year 2033. Very futuristic but we'll get used to it.

The S212 Wagons look soooo good. I can even tolerate it with the new Star grille which I think looks horribly awkward and mismatched on the Sedan.
Something about how sporty and sleek the Wagon looks just looks much sportier than the Sedan even, and this is coming from a "Wagon hater".
