Importing a US car into Canada
Greetings,
Does anyone know what would be involved in importing and licensing a US C63 BS into Canada (Ontario to be specific)?
My 25quattro Audi is a US vehicle, but I got it used (it was a demo vehicle with under 1K miles) form a Canadian Audi tuner shop who was also a dealer, hence I bought the car fully licensed and ready to drive. The speedo had both MPH and KM/H markings and the car was equipped with (switchable) DRLs, which are the only two requirements that I am aware of, and all the local dealers fully honoured the manufacturer warranty.
Has anyone gone down this road before with a Merc and is it worth it?
Cheers,
Doug

There's a lot of info on the subject
But CDN cars have different bumper regulations so you will need to investigate what needs to be done
You should also contact a dealer who will charge a fee to inspect the car and certify for Canadian use and I believe also upgrade the bumper reinforcement as well as add DRLs
I also remember seeing this on MBCAs website

Go on the Transport Canada website, this will tell you after you snoop around for a bit. I bought my cars in Alabama and brought them over back to Canada. When I looked last you could not bring over a BS , not quite sure why. When you do or if you buy you must present a copy of the ownership and a printout by the manufacturer, this case MB stating there are no recalls on the vehicle ( 350.00 from MB), these papers must be sent to the Queenston Lewiston border crossing 3 days before you bring the car over. Once you start looking into the matter it will be clear as mud. At the border you will pay excise tax on the purchase value of the car, so bring a good Visa card with lots of room. When you get the car back you must apply to RIV Canada and they will for 225.00 send you a sticker to put on the door stating it meets Canadian Standards. The car must pass a certification showing it has daytime running lights" from the factory or dealer installed( no backyard setups) and it must have a metric speedo which is usually easy as you can go into the command system and set the dash up for this. A word of advice, do not buy the car before researching whether or not it will be accepted in Canada, call the border crossing number and verify your intentions with them first and remember must be 3 days, car must be brought over between 8 and 4PM Monday to Friday only at QLewiston crossing.
Just another thought owner of car in the states must have the original title for the car any copies mean he or she is not the owner but there is a lein on the car, all liens must be taken care of and you must have an original title.
When you get back of course the vehicle must be safety checked and E tested prior to ownership change and at this time you pay sales tax unless you have lived in the states and have a US title for the car in your name.
Just checked and they list CLK63BS not admissible 2000-2009 all else looks good but check> no other mention of BS
Good Luck

Sounds like a painful process. When you get to the border crossing bend over and grab your ankles, eh?
About 10 years ago I sold a Camaro IROC-Z to a guy from Canada. I know he had a lot of trouble getting it into Canada. I'm not sure it ever made it. The car had a few issues.

1. Fax clear title and export form to US port where you'll be going through 72 hrs in advance. No liens allowed on title.
2. Drive car to US port 72 hours after fax, export car, get title stamped as exported.
3. Fill out RIV import form on Canada side. Pay duty, tax, A/C tax, gas guzzler tax, etc.
4. Go to registry, show RIV papers, get form 2.
5. Get car provincially inspected. Register car.
6. Get cluster changed at MB dealer, DRL turned on, and inspection done to get recall clearance (needed for warranty)
7. Go to Canadian tire for fed inspection, get form 2 stamped. Send that + recall letter to RIV to eventually get Canadian compliance sticker.

C63 BS is really an option code on the C63 (technically speaking) so it's allowed across the border. CLK 63 BS was a different story, it was a different model altogether.
Where there's a will, there's a way.

Big THANK YOU to everyone that replied. Looks like buying a Canadian car is the more sensible option, and furthermore it looks like the US C63BS prices are about the same as for the Canadian cars. Wasn't aware that there was one for sale in Ottawa - I'll definitely look into it.
Cheers,
Doug
P.S. Tim - it wouldn't be an upgrade, it would be an addition. Just got rid of the Audi and again have room in the garage.

Actually not that difficult, it sounds like a lot but once you get going, it's just a matter of being organised. Prices are about the same though for C63 BS. Makes more sense for harder to find cars or exotics.

rage2, can you clarify, you said that you only need to do the modifications at MB if you want warranty. From the RIV website it looks like you can use a carfax report in lieu of the recall clearance. does that sound right?
also, did you need to provide additional paperwork to prove the stock immobilizer meets CMVSS 114?
thanks
