i haven't seen or heard of anyone doing this in years . i would think as long as you don't throw it back in gear before the rpm comes down , it would hurt anything .

Ok I do this all the time and yes things can happen. I was on the hwy and did it and when I put it back into drive the car stuck in 7th all the way to a stop. It eventually fixed itself but I had part of the tranny replaced under warranty. I still do it but now I wait for the revs to get back to idle before putting it into drive. NEVER put it back into drive when it is revving up or down.

Doesn't it waste gas to throw it in neutral when the car has momentum down hill. The wheels turning keep the engine turning without gas but if you throw it in neutral gas is used to keep the engine turning.

No, because coasting downhill in gear still keeps you at a higher RPM than if you pop it into neutral. I've cut it too close before running down my tank (I know, I know) and you can actually see the MPG gauge go up when you coast in neutral.

No it wont hurt anything, doesnt matter how you do it. It has a self protection in the programming. try going down the highway and shifting into reverse it'll just go into neutral and free rev because its smarter than that. You cant even do a neutral bomb (rev up in neutral at a stop and drop into drive) because it will wait for the rpms to come down before engaging. Dont be scared rev away at the haters.

I doubt you would do any damage to the tranny, there is too much logic in our cars, it will protect itself.
However, the bigger issue is that when you do that while in motion, you have lost all control over the drive wheels, your vehicle is essentially freewheeling. It's a minor loss of control, but throw that into a bunch of other circumstances and you could end up in an accident.
