The fan in the back of the console (where the temperature controls are for the back seat) has been making me crazy. There is something stuck in it or stripped or something and it is whirring and buzzing something fierce. Every time I start the car it comes on high and I have to reach around and turn it down.

Anybody had any experience with this or know how to get into that unit without taking the whole console out?

Could it be your blower motor ?
I had a issue a while back where everytime I raise the fan ac/heat to blow harder it would get louder but not of full blast only midway and under .
Changed the ac filter and blower motor and everything was fine .
Located under the dash in passenger side.

Thanks for that MThis. I dont know how I have missed those Benzworks vids, but those are a great resouce. But I dont think thats what this is. The sound is definitely coming from behind those vents. Maybe I should make a video of it, even if I dont get any info I am sure at some point I'll get it sorted and the video may help the next guy with a diagnosis.
