White smoke on warm start

Today I drove about 80 highway miles after work and parked the car in the garage. I will be going on a trip tomorrow so I checked the oil. It was about 3mm into the " normal " zone on the dipstick. About an hour after coming home, I started the car to back into the driveway and I got a puff of white smoke on start up. It stopped almost immediately, but it was enough that I could see the smoke curling up in the mirror and another person in the garage asked if that was normal.

The car has 800 miles and I have observed the break in warnings (mostly). This happened one other time I started the car with a simliar scenario. Cold starts seem to have not precipitated the smoke.

Any ideas or thoughts? I am not too worried but that doesn't necessarily seem normal.

White smoke aka water vapor, or white smoke aka oil?

Hard to break in an engine with synthetic oil and a low friction coating on the cylinders babying it everywhere.

Probably have some blow by creating excess crank pressure carrying oil into the intake manifold. As the car sits the oil leaks into the cylinder from an open intake valve and WALLA, white smoke.

I've been taught the following...
  • White "smoke" = water it evaporates rather than dissipates
  • Black smoke = engine running rich
  • Blueish smoke = oil
This is provided everything else is fine and with your car being new I'd say everything is. Just keep an eye on your oil level and coolant levels just to be sure

What you have described seems normal and is very common on engines with larger piston-cyl clearances like the C 63. As long as it stops, and especially if no smoke on hard acceleration.

What do you mean Warm start? The car is warm or the weather? If the weather is cold, I think it will be ok!

Car sat for two days. Started her up this morning, and I had the same thing happen. White smoke that filled my garage.

Took it for a drive, acted ok, didnt do it again, but made me nervous.

Both actually. I have not had the issue since then.

Still, I appreciate the feedback.

I just took delivery this weekend, have about 300 miles on the car, and have the very same thing,

something I noticed, is my passanger side exhaust tips are covered in black exhaust soot and the driver side ones are clean, does anyone have an idea on that?

I could be way off

But one thing I've noticed with the New Owners (Myself included) is that we sit in the car and play with all the settings. Well, at least for me, I find I'm pushing the start button to activate the accessories and such several times and the fuel pump keeps priming and priming over and over while I'm playing and messing with stuff. All the time never actually starting the car. The next morning I experience what the OP is stating???? Maybe some correlation?

Ha 507 AMG (dammit I wanted that one) I did the same thing today with the on button at 2 setting trying to get the garage door activated (finally did). But I did not notice any white smoke when I finally fired it up (P31 package and sedan). These engines are big and so are the pistons so some blow-by before piston rings are seated is probably normal. By the way, what is the break in procedure and for how many miles?

White smoke is normally coolant.

If you see this again, run around and sniff the smoke if you can. If it smells sweet, it is likely coolant getting into a combustion chamber on shut down.

You guys keep worrying. IMO the rings are not seated until 12K to 20K. Until then some oil will get by the piston rings into the combustion chamber. If you start up cold after full use you may get white smoke on start up during the break in miles, but not a lot. If you start your car cold to reposition it for e.g. a wash and then start it you will get more . That is still due to unseated rings. The engine pumps some oil into the combustion chamber , but it is reduced as the piston warms ,expands to support the rings. After the rings seat there should be little to no smoke on cold startup based upon my 30K car. On a long downhill coast and subsequent acceleration there should be no smoke. If so think valve seals or guides. Worst scenario is heavy smoke on heavy acceleration which points to a ring , piston or cyl problem. IMO you are seeing oil smoke and it will stop. So sleep well and refuse a $500 pvc valve.
