Hi All,

I finally broke the 1k break in period so I decided to try manual shifting and boy was that fun! Until I went to shift into fifth after getting on the freeway and instead of pushing the shift lever to the right I pushed it straight up (was thinking of the IS F shifting). Anyway, the engine revved pretty high but not to red line and the transmission made a squeal sort of sound before I put it back into gear and continued on very embarrassed of course. Will this kind of stupid move damage the trans.? The car ran fine all of the rest of the way home and it shifted fine (still in manual) with no unusual noises. Just concerned about potential problems down the road. As always, I appreciate all input as you guys/gals are the experts.

Thanks Autosport7. I feel like such an idiot for doing this. The IS F shifts up for upshifts and pull back for downshifts and even though I know how the WCT in the C63 works I guess I forgot what I was driving! Won't make this mistake again that's for sure.

How were you shifting from 1 to 4th to make you shift awkwardly the 5th ?
You should have used the shift paddles
Lol! I guess you didn't leave the car in that mode for long (which is "Neutral" if i understand your explanation). So you should be fine although the trans might not have appreciated the move. Were you monitoring your gears on the dash? I wonder what did it display? N then whatever gear was engaged back

Hi abcut973,
I wasn't watching the gears in the dash, I was looking at the RPM gauge and just did this out of (driving the IS F) habit. Ironically I used the stick to shift from 1 through 4 because there is a stop light and then a sharp left turn to get on the on ramp due to overpass construction going on. The paddles were at an awkward angle during the turn so the shifter was more convenient. I don't think the tranny would let one hit reverse while moving forward would it? Anyway, what's done is done I just hope no damage has occurred. I'll see how it drives this afternoon when I go to work. Thanks for the reply too it's much appreciated.

You will be ABSOLUTELY fine. These transmissions are 100% electronically governed. It will not allow certain things to happen. You just cant shift into 1st while going 80mph, you cannot go into reverse while going forward, etc. It has a computer that monitors what activity is "allowed". The clutches are a different story. These parts of the transmission obviously can be worn out or damaged but it needs load.

It sounds like you popped it into neutral. I don't know what the squealing sound that you heard was but it sounds like it may have been the clutch. I suspect everything will be fine though.

You will be fine. These cars are tested to the extremes.

Thanks you one and all for your input. It is truly appreciated and I am happy to hear that the potential for damage is pretty much nil. I know that Mercedes-Benz put a lot of testing behind the WCT before releasing it to the public as they did on all components of the C63. I drove it yesterday in both C and M modes and it appears to be just fine. What an awesome car this is! I recall reading an article on the C63 vs the Lexus IS F and the description was something like "The IS F is like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde with it being quiet and unassuming at low speeds. But get it past 3500 RPM and it shows its true potential whereas the C63 is like walking a pit bull that wants to chew on everyone." Not quoted exactly but I thought it a great analogy.
