Spoiler Removal
Has anyone removed the OEM trunk spoiler that came on your car to replace it with a different one. What process did you use to take it off if you DIY
Thanks

I used fishing line, wedge it under one side of the spoiler and move it back and forth in a sawing motion and it will cut through the foam tape without scratching your car or the spoiler. I then used a 3m tape residue removal wheel on a drill and cleaned up what was left over. After that little bit of rubbing alcohol cleaned up the surface.

I did my spoiler last month and used a 10lb fishing line. Worked good but snapped the line multiple times. I recommend something stronger than 10lb. Also make sure you get a stripe off wheel to remove the excess glue. All in all its a easy DIY

Fishing line worked for me. It snapped and I resorted to dental floss. Use a hairdryer to soften things up under the spoiler first and it'll probably be easier (sadly I heard that tip after I spent a couple of hours doing it cold).

Does anyone have photos of how much glue residue is generally left behind? Just curious, I have never done this before.
And as everyone knows, without pics it never happened anyway...

Heat gun + fishing line works great to remove the spoiler. Depending how old is your car you could be left with some tape residue. Use any adhesive remover to get rid of them. I have no pictures for this unfortunately but this is a simple DIY procedure.
That might help https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...m-spoiler.html

I took mine off with fishing line as well. It did break many times but only took about 15 minutes to get the spoiler off. It would have been faster if the line didn't keep breaking. Getting the old tape and glue off was another story. I used 3M vinyl adhesive remover and it worked but I had to go over it a lot of times to get it to get down to the paint. Probably took > 2 hours of spraying, letting it set and rubbing. Used a whole spray can @ $32. The fishing line did leave some small marks on the bend line on the trunk under the spoiler. Might be a problem if you are not putting another spoiler on.

I had my Mode Carbon Spoiler installed professionally over the week-end on my 2012 C63 BS.
The fit was perfect and the overall quality of the boot lid spoiler is top notch. The Carbon design even matches the direction and pattern of the OEM carbon diffuser. The installer refused to use fish line or the like, as he position is it can and often damages the paint. He only uses a heat gun and then a wheel to remove the excess adhesive. On the BS the OEM carbon spoiler was held down with two layers of 3M tape..One on the spoiler and one on the trunk. An hour job in total.. The new spoiler really looks kool. pics to follow.

there will be a lot of glue / residue after you remove the spoiler. i have some pics from when i removed mine. It took about 4 hours to remove completely. I used fishing line, heat gun, goo gone, and some other cleaners. there is a drill bit tool made by 3m designed for removing residue 3m tape quickly, but it is about $80.

I've removed tape items as follows
Heat it up at one end
Use a plastic wedge/shim to get it started
Then work the shim down the piece heating as you go
Once you get enough lifted up to grasp, just lift and heat as you go
Pops right off
Leaves very little residue

If you guys want to do the job efficiently you need this wheel. I got one from a local body shop for about $25.
You dont need a heat gun either. The fishing line cuts right through the adhesive no problem.
There is no reason this should be a 4 hour job unless you are super meticulous. I had mine installed in 2 hours and I took my time.

Q: How can I get the part off after it has been applied?
A. In general, this is difficult to do unless it is removed immediately after application. The part can be gently heated to soften the adhesive and peeled, or the foam tape can be split at one end and the part carefully peeled off. Tape and adhesive residue can most easily be removed with a 3M™ Stripe-Off Wheel without the use of solvents. 3M™ Prep Solvent-70 and 3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner can also be used to soften the adhesive residue, which can then be scraped off with a plastic squeegee.
Saw a guy at a body shop remove a spoiler
Heated it, got it started with a wedge
He lifted it up as he heated the point where tape/spoiler/body met
The heat and the tension in the spoiler peeled it right off
Less than 5 minutes and hardly any residue
