3M Black Vinyl Tape - Chrome Delete Pics Inside
I bought this tape with the intent of blacking out my trim. I will update this thread once I tackle the window trim, but I wanted to get the thread moving now for those interested in buying a product like this so for now I wrapped the trunk chrome strip.
As you can see from the listing pic, it is not a gloss black, nor is it a matte black, I would consider this more of a satin black as it has a minor sheen to it.
eBay Listing to the exact product I used to wrap the trunk trim:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-70016010616-471-Vinyl-Tape-2-in-by-36-Yard-Black/190868264442?_trksid=p2050601.c100272.m3467&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140717092400%26meid%3D8524614682722009280%26pid%3D100272%26prg%3D20140717092400%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D190868264442%26clkid%3D8524616853620425801&_qi=RTM1562569
I decided to wash and wax the beast tonight. While she was clean I figured I would give the wrap a shot.
As i stated, I will update this as I wrap the window trim. For now take a peak at this under 2 minute wrap job.
Before:
After:
This literally only took 2 minutes. The tape is very pliable, it sticks well, and best of all it is somewhat stretchy.
This is a dry install tape in that I don't believe you can wet the surface first for proper placement and press the water out, should be applied on a dry surface.
You will have bubbles to work out though as it does not have air bubble release technology.
The listing claims it is good for automotive uses so we will see how well it holds up over time.

Nice results. So you wrapped it with the trunk strip on?
Do you plan to do the same with the window trims? Directly on the car?

Nice. The only thing I would worry about is how well it will hold up over time. I know 3M markets their dedicated car vinyl wrap products (like 1080) as specially engineered to hold up well over time (sun, heat, etc.), and be easy to apply (you mention bubble-release technology - the vinyl wrap just barely sticks until you firmly press it down and roll it). But this may somewhat marketing so it'd be great if the tape holds up just as well. Good thread and looks good.

At the end of the day, if I have to rip it off in a year, no big deal, the roll will allow me to redo it probably 5 times or better for $25. But I think it will hold up pretty well. We shall see.
The roll is so manageable since the width is only 2 inches and being so pliable makes curves and such so much easier.

This material acts kind if the same way. It doesn't lock down in place until you give it a fair amount if pressure. I am fairly certain it will hold up over time, seems like a good quality material.

Thank you, long way away from being complete. This is the straightest least difficult to wrap, that is why I started there. See how the rest turns out. lol
Thanks. I have wrapped some things in the past. I am hoping it wont be too difficult. fingers crossed
I hope to try and tackle it this Friday night. That is if my emblems ever get here!!! They should be here late this week as they have shipped.
I am now thinking with the tape being more of a satin black, I may try dipping my emblems again as they will be off the car and easily dipped to perfection. I also have the glossifier which will give it that light sheen. Im not too too worried about the grill being a bit glossier.
Thanks. I love forums as well. I have been a diy guy since I was a kid. I have removed engines, rebuilt them and put them back in with success so these little wrap jobs do not scare me so much. lol
Then again, I did have my *** handed to me on a tint job one time, just couldn't do it. I was like wtf!
Sounds good. It actually ended up being kind of tricky using 2" wide strips of the 1080 vinyl to get them to conform to the long, curved surface of the upper window trim piece. Applying this stuff perfectly is really a skill, and I definitely don't have that skill! I'm sure I'm going to have to redo mine because I was a 1st timer anyway. One thing I would suggest if you do remove the trim and apply the tape is make sure you have plenty of overlap onto the back/non-visible side, and also don't put too much stress on the vinyl. I put a lot of force into it, trying to ensure good longterm adhesion, and I may have overdone it a bit. But the tape could even just be the same product anyway, with a different brand applied to it. Be cool to see how it turns out. good luck

As for holding up....
When I decided to stick with the 55tech Single Fin Grille that had chrome in it, I pulled all of my 3M off. Therefore I can not give a proper assessment.
I will say this, when you install it, you will need to stretch it to get all of the creases and bubbles out. When you do this I highly recommend using a heat gun. I didn't use one until I was finished to ensure it all stuck properly, in doing so, as a bit of time went on, the tape began to shrink a bit and started exposing a bit of chrome near the edges where you have black plastic on the edges of the molding.

Nice, I've been thinking about getting my badges and chrome black wrapped to go with my white car
Was actually considering just wrapping the spoiler instead of buying carbon
