Stumbled upon my wife on the road, so I drove the C63 hard, then asked her how it sounded from outside..

"annoying car sound!"
"you're going like 20 mph, and the engine is like BAAHBAAAHH"
"I think you made it louder than how it came"

I of course took these all as compliments, sort of . The first and second comments were likely due to excessive downshifting and staying in first gear in a residential area. The third was her finally pwning me on installing exhaust upgrades. Took the walk of shame and admitted it..

It got me thinking that I really ought to have a listen from outside. I tend to press it hard to get a good listen from the inside, but I know it's probably blaring for everyone else. Not trying to be the 'a $$hole mercedes guy'.

Any of you ever listened from outside? (in real life, not just videos)

yeah man, the ****'s loud. first time i heard it, my gf dropped me off somewhere and drove off in my car, very slowly. the **** was still loud as hell. i can only imagine how loud it is when i'm romping on it and downshifting.

lol.. Haven't had mine for long and have mikes H power pipe on it and am yearning for more sound. I think I need to have my wife drive it because I have no idea how loud it really is to everyone else (right now I wish it was louder).

agreed. even though we give our c classes a lot of crap for fit and finish issues, it is fairly well sound insulated. I can barely hear the exhaust unless I have the window open.

It all depends on throttle. My neighbor said when my wife drives past his house he can't hear a thing but when I do it sounds "real badass." C vs. M.

Always kind of knew it was "loud" since a downshift gets heads turned pretty quick (then the look of surprise that a Mercedes was making that sound). Other day a friend took a quick vid of me just accelerating, even in the vid it sounded extremely loud and I am 100% stock.

I was traveling behind a guy on a Harley Davidson. Those of you who know, know they are fairly loud at idle, let alone under full throttle.

When we pulled out from a stop sign, he hammered on his bike, I then decided, well this is a great opportunity to hammer on the 6 point 3 as I have tons of space ahead of me. As we were coming to rest at the red light up ahead, he was down shifting, as was I (EC V5 Tuned with throttle blip - keep in mind). Upon coming to a complete stop, he looks back, pushes his bike backward up to my window and yells, "HOLLY **** THAT THING IS LOUD!" He looks down at my fender badge and says "A FRIGGEN 6 POINT 3 - DAMN ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!?" As the light turned green he asked that I drive up ahead of him so he can hear it from the back. LOL

Kinda funny that a HD guy is complimenting me on a Merc exhaust note, I took that as one hell of a compliment, but also realized just how loud these cars really are!

Took me a while to hear it from the outside, about 2 years, though with the windows cracked/down it always sounds loud and nice in terms of a V8..........not to mention others commenting favorably. And while there are many decent ones, the M156 arguably the best out of the factory V8 sound ever - certainly top 2 or 3 if you wanna count screaming, higher pitched, super hi-revving Ferrari V8s.


I mean, can't count the amount of times it's been described as a NASCAR V8 sound. That's some high praise. Have also heard a combo NASCAR - German DTM race car sound, which describes it best to me (being a fan of both race series').

• Anyway, one day I'm leaving downtown Miami and see a black one up in the left lane a couple car lengths ahead. By this time I've only seen 4 in a couple years, so I'm intrigued. Exactly the reason I passed on three available M3s/one IS-F; rarity................but I digress.
• The car apparently needs to make a right turn and is in the wrong lane, so the driver - seeing an opening - punches is really hard to get in the space so he can turn.
• Now, it sounded loud & nice, but waaaaay more than from the cabin.
• And I ain't no punk and I ain't b*&$h - STOP LAUGHING! - but it was so loud yet still properly V8 sounding............it kinda startled me. Okay scared the sh-- outta me. Made me jump a little bit. Okay, okay. Alot. Geez!!
• First thought: Damn, is that what this thing sounds like? Whoa.

So that's my story. The only sound I've hear that I might consider better is from a Roush Mustang.........but that's Roush Racing tuning a $30-35K Mustang GT that also comes stock with a very nice sound for the price. Ford SVT and Shelby sounds? Nah. Not quite an AMG.

Lastly, would be interested to hear what others have heard from non AMGs, as while everyone's not as obsessive as we and the boys & girls in Affalterbach are with sound, we are not alone.

My next door neighbors were having some work done, and their contractor checked out the 507 a couple of times as I started it up, pulled out of my garage, and drove off. A few days later the owner had me come over to check out the work, and the contractor asked me what all I did to make that car sound so good. I told him it came stock that way, and he was suprised to say the least.

I did some runs with a friend in a Mustang Convertible. We drove under an underpass and I accelerated, he said he almost lost his ears on the upshift

I have a vid with a proper microphone strapped to the back of the car, it sounds absolutely badass.

Yah most of us defiantly don't realize how loud the car is outside of the cabin. Had my sister drive off with it once in C-mode, and it was still growling the whole way through. Couldn't even begin to imagine what it sounds like when I hit 7k, hammering it down in manual mode in the middle of the night. Must be deafening!

Some of you guys with straight pipe delete resonators and cats must be real menaces to your neighbourhood.

I gotta start my car with the garage door closed as I'm pretty sure my neighbors complained after I first awakened the beast after bringing her home. Whiny *******s. I love the sound of this car...

Yep, many of these AMG cars are loud from the factory, but a good loud.

To me, it seems that the C63's, SLS's and CLS63's have the best sound....the other AMG's are a little muffled in my opinion. I have two neighbors with Turbo AMG’s – one owns a 5.5 Biturbo E63 and the other a 5.5 Biturbo CLS63. When I see the E63 go by, it sounds dead, but when the CLS passes by, that **** sounds deep and nice. Both cars are bone stock.

One time I was out in the front washing our outside windows when I heard my wife passing by to park in the back, I tell ya, it sounded deep and throaty as well with stock exhaust. Since then I’ve delete the Secondary Cats and replaced with Mike's H-pipe.

Now with the H-pipe, the sound is the same at roughly 10 to 20 mph but with a slight deeper tone. But at 30 mph and above, it is much more alive, but not ear piercing loud. The H-pipe with the rest of the stock exhaust system is perfect if you're looking to just juice things up a little.

IMHO, in terms of overall V8 sound, to me, the American V8 holds the crown followed by AMG then the latest Jaguar V8 engines. There is nothing like a thunderous V8 engine sound to wake up the soul in the morning, noon and at night.

I let a friend drive mine the other day while I followed him in the Gallardo. First time I've really heard it from the outside since I've installed headers/decatted. Was soooo damn loud! I was grinning like a 16 year old who just lost his virginity.

I'm running K2 with a MBH X-pipe and have followed my wife a few times (run to the gym in separate cars). As long as she is not romping on it, it actually sounds quiet.

I ran an autocross the other day and the announcer kept talking about how great the C63 sounds. Inside the car it just seems very quiet to me. My last 2 cars (2001 Z28 and 2006 Corvette) had cutouts and those were LOUD with the cutouts open.

On a side note, I was running an autocross a couple of years ago in my Vette and I had the cutouts open. My wife said some guy sitting next to her snidely commented on this guy that can afford a Vette, but can't afford mufflers!

I always like to gun it while I'm in tunnels the friends in car behind me describe it as "thunder" too bad the cabinet in our car is too quite, cant quite enjoy the sound.
