Probably backed into something in the past and damaged the weld.
There is no way a weld can fail like that w/o any abuse.

I was thinking something like that, maybe backed into a spot and hit the curb or went over a speed bump and caught the tips from below. Thought I heard guys with lowered cars having that problem. Not sure if OP is stock height or not.
