Texas Hill Country Driving Tour Review
This weekend I took a Friday through Monday driving tour of the TX Hill Country from Dallas to Fredericksburg and back. We drove to Fredericksburg on Friday, wine country tours, German food & beers, downtown shopping & fun on Sat. We went to the Pacific WWII Memorial Museum yesterday and saw the reenactment of the WWII Pacific battles & history this morning. I am currently at todays stop in Lampasas, TX. In the morning we head back to Dallas, another 3-4 hours. By far the best part of the trip was today as far as driving. We traveled through Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. Wow! Very scenic and incredible twist & turns in the C63...and yes you can open it up on a few straightaways once out of the refuge. You have to watch out for deer though. Excellent run, roads are in great condition, highly recommended trip in our cars if you get an opportunity to run it sometime! Here is the map link http://mapq.st/10TyJ7u The route will need a few changes I'll report when I get back on those if anyone is interested.

I am down in the hill country many times each year. For the run from DFW to Fredericksburg I favor highway 16. It's 2 lanes with almost constant sweepers and elevation changes - much more interesting than Hwy 281. A fantastic shortcut from 281 to 16 is to use FM2005, which runs from Hamilton to Goldthwaite.
The most entertaining roads are south and west of Kerrville. FM335/336/337 aren't known as the twisted sisters for nothing!
