SAD, SAD, SAD Day!!! A "real" C-class AMG
So, they did. I was hoping that they weren't gonna do it. I first started noticing when all classes started to take cues and resemble each other.
Well, there is now an AMG "Sport" line. There was a "package" before, but this is a midline model. Legitimately. It will be packaged, branded, and badged, yes badged AMG. I feel like they are just diluting the brand and prestige of something that comes out of Affalterbach and the AMG garage.

I was hoping this type of marketing would not move over to the MB brand. False hopes i guess, it was inevitable. Im actually quite surprised how long MB took to make an "AMG" denoted line for the non-AMG cars.
At the end of the day, makes little difference. To the un-knowing every day consumer they simply purchased a variant of a car. The enthusiasts know its not the real deal.
IMHO its a good move (market wise), With a line like this it allows for enthusiasts a myriad of OEM performance parts. If you take a look at our Bavarian brothers, they have been enjoying the options of M-Sport performance parts for years. From Carbon ceramics to BMW branded Akra exhausts that can be purchase and installed after vehicle purchases.

These will not have AMG badging on the exterior. At most, there could be an "AMG Sport" badge on the front fenders.
Overseas, sport package cars have always been called "AMG package" cars.
The most these cars will have is AMG wheels and perhaps AMG floor mats.
For example, here is the C450 (notice there is no AMG badge):

Hate to burst the bubble. It's not just a "package" as it once was. They are not on the road yet, but will be badged AMG. Here is a quick sentence from the article,:
"The model designations follow the logic of regular Mercedes-Benz models, with “AMG” added. For instance, the C-class derivative expected for the Detroit auto show will be called the Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG."

Is it really so bad ? BMW did that to compete with Audi S cars... It's not much more than a rebranding since they had the 135i and 335i already, but the M performance cars really are good stuff for people who can't afford a full on M. The idea behind it is that people who buy an M performance car will be more likely to move up to a full on M car later on.
If it's done well by MB, and I'm sure it will, I don't see too much the problem. Just don't put AMG badges everywhere though :P

They will not receive an AMG badge on the trunk.
There will be an "AMG Sport" badge on the front fenders, like BMW does with the M235i.
I'm not trying to be confrontational but that's a fact. It has even been confirmed on the Private Lounge.
When the Detroit photos emerge and confirm such, I will post them here.
Just because they're throwing the AMG name at the end of the traditional model designation does not mean the cars will be badged identically to the genuine AMG cars.
I am finding it hard to believe that people are getting so riled up about this. To each their own.

Precisely. AMG doesn't want to dilute the brand either.
AMG does want to capitalize on what BMW and Audi have been doing for years with their M Sport cars and S Line cars.
Neither BMW nor Audi gives these cars authentic M or RS/Quattro badging. Similarly, Mercedes will only be using the "Sport AMG" badging on the front fenders of the sportier models.
And, as I said before, the U.S.-bound cars may not get the "Sport AMG" badges on the front fenders at all.
