I'm only guessing but I think it's to allow air to vent into the trunk space to get rid of any moisture that ends up in there.

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
I think all cars have it to vent the pressure. Otherwise, you will have a hard time opening and closing doors and trunk.

Yep vent
You bring air in from the windshield/hood area thru the cabin and out the rear

BODY HARDWARE / QUARTER PANEL / QUARTER PANEL & COMPONENTS / Vent valve

Must have a valve the moves as pressure increases
Just a flap or something that drflects under static or velocity pressure?
Since they call it a 'valve'

yes, they vent air out only (one way valve) as you close doors/trunk to equalize air pressure/volume in the car.

That part name confirms what everybody is guessing. Each of the little grayish rectangles is a pliable rubber flap, suspended from the top. The bottom lifts up easily and then falls back into place. It's a design that allows outflow of air and prevents inflow.

I'd never thought about the need to vent but it makes good sense. Whether it's the fan running to bring in fresh air, the trunk slamming or the doors closing - there's got to be a way to release the pressure. These little things vent only from the trunk but the trunk isn't really sealed off from the passenger compartment, so they probably cover all the vent needs.

Thanks to all of you for the quick feedback!
