Racing Tow Hook

Does anybody here know where to get one of those low weight tow hooks you can screw into the stock attachment points front and rear and leave in there on track days? I bought a couple on Ebay and despite them listing the C63 as fitting, they were not even close (too short, and too small thread).

Has anybody done that?

I went through the same thing. It's an odd size M22 X 3.0. I have a nice one I used for my 996TT, and I just need to make an adapter to get it to fit.

JLMotoring might have it: http://www.jl-motoring.com/ProductDe...tCode=MBTH0001

Gents - my personal experience with the JL Motoring one is that it's for show only. Unlike the Rennline Porsche hook that I assume BLKROKT was referring to - I also have one - where the shaft is made from a single piece of steel, the JL one uses a two-piece design where the hook portion is made of much softer aluminum and screws on to the shaft using relatively fine threads that aren't nearly strong enough to actually pull the weight of a car. A friend had one until it failed in a rather spectacular fashion the very first time we tried to use it on his (now mine) E55 - the threads sheared and the flying hook took out a small divet from a nearby concrete pole that it hit (it fortunately missed the back of the towing ML which was at a slight angle and thus out of the projectile's way). The product page says "Strong construction 1.5 tons towing capacity" - but which of those cars listed there weigh under 3000 lbs???

If you actually want something functional, get two used "fixed" steelies from a local junk yard for $10 and paint them red yourself. Plus, those will also prevent people from scratching your bumpers during parallel parking.

Diabolis, just realized I had not responded to this post. Appreciate the feedback - glad to hear that before having a problem with it. Disappointing, however!

The stock one is clunky and heavy, but yes, functional it is. Hmmm.....

It would be great if there was a Rennline hook for Mercedes.

I sent Rennline a request to see whether any of the hooks they carry would fit. I attached this picture.

Need to send them the thread size/pitch too. Porsche hooks are about 4-6" too short FYI.

quick question regarding the OEM tow hook. does anyone happen to know if they're the same for all C63s? I bought my 2008 used and there isn't one in the trunk and I can't seem to find one for a 2008 on the internet. My gut instinct tells me that they wouldn't change something like a tow hook for a model that pretty much stayed the same in terms of weight and design over it's lifespan. can anyone confirm?

http://www.jl-motoring.com/SearchRes...w+hook&Submit= shows a nice non-oem one.

Here's an OEM one. It apparently fits facelift cars only. https://www.oediscountparts.com/part...agramCallOut=3

That site doesn't appear to list one for the PFL cars.

I called MB of Tucson and the parts guy gave me a part number that pops up as a tow hook for FL cars. I'm still a bit hesitant to throw $30 out the window and still not fix the problem. Maybe aftermarket is the way to go in this case.

There is NO aftermarket. Right now it's OEM or nothing. I've been searching everywhere trying to find an M22x3 stainless stud that I can have cut and welded up, or threaded on both sides to act as an adapter to my existing hook. Can't even find anything in that size. Bizarre.

maybe that explains why mine was missing. they're hot commodities LOL. everything else is still in there, including the white gloves. anyone happen to know if there's a part number stamped on the tow bolt/hook?

Now that I think about it.... I'll just have the existing tow hook chopped up and tapped to accept the nice one I have. Problem solved.

I visited the BMW import facility recently. All the cars coming in from overseas arrive with tow hooks installed front and rear. All of the extras get tossed into a dumpster and scrapped. I saw thousands of them headed towards melt-down.

So, two questions - will the BMW version fit? If not, is there a possibility that Mercedes does the same thing?

Checked already. The BMW tow hook thread is wrong.

I think Miatas have the right thread pitch from what I'm reading online. That was the only other car I found.
