All done. Here's to you for tackling this difficult job on your own. Nice support from the members as well. Congrats.

The tappet noise is likely just the new lifters filling up to pressure with oil and the smoke just burning off a little oil from the headers as you said.

Time to dump the oil?

Sounds like buckets still pressuring with oil.

Yup - draining the oil as we speak so I can go for a drive. Yes, thanks to all that have helped out. Definitely could not have taken on a project like this without their guidance.

Yeah tappet noise is virtually gone.

I can't get this video to upload right now but it sounds exactly like this:

You don't want me doing this to your car lol I'm pretty sure I didn't even do this correctly on my car.

Will wait until you upload the actual vid. But was your AC running?

Video of hissing noise:

Thanks for helping me out! I can't recall if the ac was running, but I don't think so.

Side note: extracting the oil now and it looks to be pretty chocolate milky.

I know this is not a very educated guess, but have you checked all your vacuum lines?

Hoping for the best man, big kudos for doing this.

Sounds like the intake pipe (the Y that connects to the IM) releasing pressure. That plastic box in the middle of it holds a vacuum.

Alright, let me poke around back there and see what I can come up with. I'll report back.

This is mine, with the bellows removed like you have it, when turning off. I hope this helps.

Thanks.

Update: Changed the oil and tighten up the airboxes/y pipe fitting. I didn't remove the y-pipe I don't know why it'd be loose. I'll have to take a look again but I'm just a bit beat for now.

On that note, took the car for a 60 second drive and the dash lit up with ABS, ABR inoperable.

Steering also got insanely hard. More hoops to jump through.

I didn't remove nor touch the PCV though. In fact, I kept the y-pipe in tact and only removed the airboxes which is why I'm so confused.

Oh well, will look into in soon. A bit burnt out at this point.

Did you put the pulley back on and the belt correctly.

Just checked -- yup. I'm only getting the error codes after actually driving from a minute or so.

I could rev or idle all day in the driveway and not throw the codes which I why I ruled out belt install issues.

Speed sensor on all 4 wheels plugged in?

What exactly is happening for codes and not working?

Uh - I think so. I didn't touch anything speed sensor related as far as I know.

So this is exactly how the code is acting up.

I start the car - no codes. Rev it, let it idle, no codes. Then I drive it for 45 seconds or so and the car says "Brake ABS, ABR, ESP not available" or something along those lines.

While that happens, the power steering becomes progressively harder and harder.

What codes do you see from the ESP module? I have a lot of experience with that fkn thing.

This is what I get from my code reader:

ABR Adaptive Brake ESP_E1

Control Unit N30/4 ESP, Internal Fault 5000 5944

It's likely completely unrelated unless you hit the module while doing the HBs.

I would try re-seating the connector then clearing the codes and run the diagnostic on the ESP module.

I know with 99.5% certainty I didn't even touch that module. Not even while torquing the bolts down, etc.

It's the weirdest thing. At this point, I'm praying it's a battery low issue or something 1 off but I doubt it.

I don't have STAR, but I'll reseat the connector, clear the code, take it for a quick spin and report back. Thanks.

What code reader do you have? Most can do the full scan on the module. I don't mean the STAR diagnostic DAS scan.

My module has been flaky for a year or so now. The last time it faulted for a few weeks then magically fixed itself.

If you have access to monitor all the ESP sensors make sure they are reporting data properly.

EDIT: The fact you just have the generic faults (other faults are specific to an ESP sensor) it's likely a flaky module which could potentially be power related.

I've got a Autel AL619. Also, re: being power related, I unplugged my battery during the HB install... not sure if that could be related?

Clear the codes, see if they come back. I have them not come back after clearing before.
