When I step on the brake and push the start button, the dash is lighting up normally and it sounds like the starter spins up but never engages and the engine won't turn over.

If I pull the starter button, put the key in the ignition and turn it, the car starts right away.

This happened once about a month ago but never recurred until this morning. Today it's happened twice.

Any suggestions about where to start looking?

I had that issue when my car battery was on its last legs.

The car was parked outside, and this may have been the coldest morning we've had this fall. Car battery theory sounds like a possibility.
