PSS is dead, meet the new Michelin Pilot Sports 4S

Interested to hear feed back from trusted members on here once these are released. Sad to see the PSS die but let's see how these hold up. For now here's a link to a press release.

I like the longevity rating 32k miles - I am very doubtful of that number - PSS's where like 15k mile tires 20 if your drove like a wuss - no way they are double the mileage!

Interesting. I like the part about 'velvet sidewalls'. Lol.

Seriously though, the performance looks good (although the 'competitors' listed seem out of place), and more robust rim protection is always welcome. My Dunlop Sport Maxx Race have about 1/2" of rubber sticking out to protect the rim. More tires should be made that way.

Agreed no downside to more rim protection in my book - big plus!

I'd imagine that the tire life of 32k was on a square setup that was rotated. I'd expect about half of that for a staggered setup like ours, much like the current 30k/15k warranty for square/staggered setups.

A street price between $300-320 is what I'd expect for 275/30-19.

Haha I chuckled about the 'velvet sidewalks' as well.

I agree completely, especially for a street tire.

My guess, over priced! But, those of us who picked up our cars when they were new or relatively new, already accepted the fact that these beasts would eat rubber and gasoline more than most cars!

In any case, it's always exciting to see new tires, tech etc. hope they live up to the hype that's already being delivered. And hope they aren't ridiculously priced.

But an owner that picked up a used C63 did accept this as used cars don't eat as much rubber and gasoline????

Very true, it's great they are expanding out their brand and they must be pretty confident with that new tire since they are removing, what I figure to be one of their top/popular tires.

There is a difference between not wanting to pay more than you have to and not being prepared to pay. Those who buy these vehicles early in their life generally pay serious $$$ for them and accept that maintaining them at peak performance will not be cheap. Enter the late life buyer who can buy an older C63 for the price of what he will pay for a late model white goods car but does not understand the maintenance costs and in anyway does not have the $ to pay for it. I would not put el cheapo chinese tyres on any car let alone a performance car but there are people who will because they can't afford to buy new tyres on a regular basis.

Based on Michelin's claims for the new PS4S I for one will be giving them a go next time round.

Eh - I can see where you're coming from, but I also think some of the statements above are loaded and can be very easily argued.

Just like your bolded statement above indicated -- some people will put crap tires on any and every car they own, while some, like yourself, will still put a good tire on their car even if it was a mini van.

I don't think price of the car dictates how much one is willing to spend on their performance car IF they are automotive enthusiasts. Plenty of Michelin/Yoko AD-08's being sold to Honda guys and those tires ain't cheap.

This argument comes down to more whether you're a true car guy, or bought the car to impress people ie shows up with an AMG on sh*tty all seasons... AMG wow factor but no grip. Sweet.

But I get it, like AMG's, Astons, M cars, the real cash comes out with maintenance.

The performance stats on these do look good -- I love my PSS's, but a +1.39 per lap? Hell yeah.

I used to think that less grippy tires and being able to slip at lower speeds was more fun (think GT86). Now that I have power, I find it super frustrating when I can't put power down. Fresh PSS are adequate. I hope the new tires don't disappoint. I'm sure they won't.

Like when you still have the winters on near the end of the season, get an abnormally warm day and have no chance beating the kid in mom's accord beside you.

so if the pss is being discontinued but the new tire is offered only in 19 and 20 inch wheel sizes, what's up for all of us still on 18s?

This is what I meant exactly (and generally speaking)

Yea that sucks if they don't end up making them in 18s (if they do end up being an awesome tire). I guess you will have to get some bigger wheels

The following applies to nearly everything in life and is what I have told many: If one can't afford proper maintenance on something, that means one really can't afford it in the first place.
