C63 507 Autocross Results

I went out this weekend with the BMW CCA @ the Houston Police Academy Autocross event.

See below the raw results of how a stock 14 C63 507 on stock conti's stacks up against the cars that day of varying prep, some stock, some fully race prep.

I only made two runs, as the grid was a bit slow, and I wanted to just see what I could run without much prep, and without beating on my car too much.
Air pressure: 46psi (FR), 44psi (Rear).
Stock Conti Tires
Walked the course 2 times.
Worked the course before running.

1st run was a 56.7X
2nd run was a 56.4X... so did not expect to cut much more off that day.

I was the only merc on that day.
Not as much fun as road racing....... 56 Sec's goes by soo fast. Not worth it IMHO.

Hopefully this gives an idea what these cars can do stock with a moderately exp driver

You were beaten by a q60?

j/k I used to autocross a lot years ago and really enjoyed it. There are some people at work who are trying to get me back into it, but I would rather take my RX-7 or the STi.

Nice to see tha s2k still rule at autocross.

Do not underestimate the mighty CIVIC

Many of these cars are gutted w/sticky tires.

I invite you to post up your recent aX results in a stock C63 for a true measure of comparison

This just get's me more excited to p/u an old E36 for track days. Much better platform for a 'budget' track car. They can be had for $5K - $20K dep on level of prep already performed.

I'll keep the 507 for street duty.

At least you beat one of the Miata's (and the M4!) - how are those stock Conti's now - probably have a lot less tread on them!

That's why I only made 2 runs. The fronts were getting chunked a wee bit. They only have 1K miles on them.

Not doubting the state of prep of some of the cars that come out to autocross.

R-cmpds and weight reduction

Having spent years autocrossing I would not bring the C63 out other than for curiousity. Can only imagine the abuse the tires would show after a day of autocross.

And yes, getting beat my beaters with r-cmpds and suspension work with a great driver is always demoralizing, or is it inspiration?

As long as you are having fun!

Demoralizing no..... it was somewhat fun. But the time / drive ratio is all wrong.... with 7hrs invested for <2mins drive time

Also note it was a BMW event, but no BMW's placed in the top 10... you had to go down to 15.... so just shows what cars work at Auto-X.... and M power and AMG power are not your 1st choice.

I was more curious..... and also went with an M fanboy co-worker, as it was his 1st auto-x...... gave him my 5 mins of tips/tricks from my auto-x days in the late 90's.

It's worth noting that the Police Academy site is a pretty tight course which generally favors small and light cars. You might try again the next time the BMWCCA or the SCCA has an event at the dog track or at the Grand Sport Speedway site - both are much more open and horsepower is more of an asset.

2011 C63
Thanks for posting. I've autocrossed my C63 once, it was fun, but it's not very competitive. I used to autocross a 74 914, then a 74 911S, then a 94 Z28, then a 06 Vette. Surprisingly the Camaro was a better autocross car than the C63.

As far as ranking how quick different cars are, I only do this comparison at the national level. At the local level, it depends too much on the driver. I've seen terrible drivers make a Z06 Vette seem slow. Oh, and I've seen, of all things, a Chevy Citation be VERY quick! But the driver was John Heinricy. He was working for GM at the time and would run in our Solo 2 events when he was visiting the GM Proving Grounds in Mesa, Arizona.

zc - thanks for the tip. I'm shopping for a clean E36 M3 for track abuse now. From my research a better platform for my budget @ 40 oil

glenn - good pt on the driver aspect at the local level. That GT3 was QUICK! I used to auto-X a supercharged fox mustang with stock brakes in the 90's........ in Street Mod. .... in a vert. I was always 10 sec behind my class, and it sucked. . No fun with the wrong car for sure.

Hopefully this thread gives some data for a stock c63 at a local level club event. Good or bad it is what it is... data.

Good stuff man.

I've often wondered about getting into autocrossing as a way to stay sharp between track days. I don't really know where to start - any tips? They hold frequent events at the Giants parking lot in the Meadowlands so I might start there.

I've thought that it would be a good way to get a better feel for the handling without the danger of going off a road course at high speed into something solid (i.e. you can't play around with drifting and tight cornering techniques at a track like I assume you can in a big open lot with nothing but cones to get in your way).

Start here - http://www.nyrsccasolo.com/

and maybe also here - AutoX4U.com | Everything Autocross in NJ, NY, & PA

SCCA is a good place to explore car control (drifting is just as much fun - and just as slow - in autocross as it is on the track). MOST SCCA autocross events are designed so that even crazy newbies can't run into anything that would do car damage. However, a volunteer does each course layout and nobody is infallible - it's worth looking around for things that could hurt you before committing to run.

There are autocross groups up in the Hudson Valley too, Poughkeepsie Sports Car Club and Mo-Hud SCCA, if you want to come a little north. I haven't had a chance to join the Poughkeepsie group yet, but did one auto-x with the MoHud group and it was a great time. Going to try to attend most all the their races next year with my Omni, the C63 would be fun to try a few times too though.

I suspect all forms of motor-sport support eachother in various ways: Karting, Auto-crossing, DE's. With only 55 seconds/lap and 3-5 laps per event.... I just don't get much out of AX. I'll prob stick with DE's, and karting....... once I get my E36M3.... I'll run a couple AX events just for fun, but it will be setup for COTA DE fun times.

A little update since this AX outting...... I picked up a beat old tired E36 M3 craigslist special.... I've been going through it top to btm in prep to get on track this summer....... a few pics. I'm really really enjoying this little car. It's 50% HP of the 507.... but man is it engaging and fun.

interior redux..... replacement carpet with backing removed.... light wgt::::

Never had a car with an actual WORN out gas pedal.... found out I was only getting 50% WOT....... LOL...... some FREE HP this weekend by adj gas pedal to WOT.....

Hoping to get on track soon.... MSR 1/2 day to sort things out...... .then ultimately COTA when I know it's safe.

These little E36's are cheap fun..... $8.8K from craigs list..... I"m into it total so far for $15K..... new tires, new sups, new brakes, new interior, alignment, new lights/emblems all around, carpet, floor mats...... it came with many n/a upgrades.... Dinan Stage II stuff.... tune, ported TB, CAI, Catback, long tubes.

I know this is not a bimmer forum..... but you guys that want to get on a track with a stick might find these worth a look.

If it's super slow on COTA....... like getting passed by everything on the long straight section.... I might do a vorshlag LS swap..... next year.
OR if the 177K mile 6 pot pops...

Cheers.

It's funny coming from modding merc's..... playing with this tired old bimmer is cheap!

It's funny how different marque forums have different tones/vibes/values..... I'm getting no love for modding this old car from the purists...... and any talk of an LS swap.... is blasphemy in certain circles

I won't be ready for cota until later this year.... need to sort out more mechanicals.... and I really don't want to hose down cota with bimmer juices and parts.
