Who Wants Different Cupholders!!!!!!
I KNOW I DO.... so i took my cup holder OUT today for some cleaning(it doesn't go up and down as fast as before, like it needs oil or something)
so i got it out some how and i started cleaning it, then i though, what the **** is all this space wasted on a mechanical popin go go gadget cup holder?
so, here is the idea, is their anyway to make a cup holder that sits LOWER...... or maybe a whole new thing to place in their? i could think of a million things i can throw in that box other then a useless cup holder.
the darn thing doesn't even hold a glass of LIPTON TEA, only coffee cups(small) and red bull!!!!
i know, i know, if i wanted more cups.... buy a mini van, but **** THAT!!!!

Ah the old CL cupholder issue. It is cute. But a total waste of space. I just put a nice white cotton shop rag in the hole and it lets you put a coffee in it for the morning. And the Cell Phone and the outgoing mail fit fine on the way home. I killed 2 of them before I realized it was overpriced waste. We dont need no stinking cupholders !

I played around trying to remove the cup holder but couldn't get it released or find anything resembling a release button. Could someone give me some instructions please? As a side issue, I noticed a switch in the front of the inside of the bottom console. Anyone know what this is for?

umm, what switch, where?>
To Remove that dang gone cup holder is tricky, first your gonna need a 6 pack of beer(your brand) and a box of bandages.... then your gonna.... lol no just kidding.
when you open the lid and the cup holder is in the compartment folded away, their is a piece of the holder mechanism that is attached to your center console, closest to the rear of the box. from what i saw, its 3 slide down slots, all you really do is with some pressure, push it up out of its clips and gently lift it all up and out, happy cleaning!!

Switch
Hey Jud, I noticed a switch as well. It's located in the arm rest console storage on the front wall. Does anyone know what it's for?

Well, I got it out and found that it was actually quite clean. However, I also noticed that there is a small amount of grease on areas where movement takes place. I'll put some grease in the areas and see how it operates.
Goliath27, regarding the switch, on my '02 CL500 it is located in the bottom portion of the console on the front partition. It is the size of a standard electrical light switch that you would find in a home, only it is black. I am just wondering what the heck it does.

"The storage compartment under the armrest can be ventilated when the automatic air conditioning is switched on. The switch is located inside the storage compartment in the front. The air temperature is about the same as that of the center air vents."

On page 166 of the owners manual for my 2003 CL500 is the following:
"The storage compartment under the armrest can be ventilated when the automatic air conditioning is switched on. The switch is located inside the storage compartment in the front. The air temperature is about the same as that of the center air vents."

Regarding the cup holder, I took it out and found it quite clean but did put it in warm water as mentioned above as a fix. I also noticed a very small amount of some time of lube on the movement areas so I put a little grease on each section. I reinstalled it and it works perfectly. Thanks for all the help from you guys.

How it could be attached in the current cup holder space would be the first question I guess. Check with one of the MB tech's to see what his/her opinion would be.

if i think correctly, it would drop right in with some space around it, that could be fixed with a small metal bracket or so?
will make trip to dealer next week for sure

OK, I figured it out. First, there is an oval hole near the top of the back plate that backs up to the common wall with the armrest. You pull that up about a ¼ to ½ inch and it will click, then you can push that back plate forward and it just lifts out freely. These are plastic inserts into plastic slots so be careful, but they are designed to release pretty easily.
So what I discovered is that the pin for the hinge was sliding out forward and extended too far to allow the gizmo to go all the way down. I also did the warm water bath for good measure. And I cleaned out the bottom of the pit which had a frick’n dinner mint wrapper in there all wadded up.
So, now it works again. And I have fallen back in love.
And the door not working WAS somehow connected to the problem, as it is fine now. The gizmo must not have been going down far enough to allow it to clear properly.

Translation
Good deal, reddog. When I was switching back and forth I could hear and feel something moving...now we know-thanks. BTW, you actually read the manual, huh? I started to but it is not the easiest thing to follow, I guess because of the translation from German to English.
