2006 C230
Camshaft timing gear problem?

I have a 2006 C230 with the 272 engine. It has 148,000 miles and is running fine. I recently had the car serviced at a local shop and they advised that the car had the following stored and current codes:

Code 1208 constant adjustment of intake camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction retarded (P0016)

Code 1200 constant adjustment of exhaust camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction retarded (P0017)

Shop stated that these indicate that the timing gear on the camshaft is stripping out/wearing out and will eventually wear smooth and car will stop. They state that it will cost approximately $5000 to fix. This seems to be a reputable shop but given that the car is running so well I am dubious.

Is this a known problem with this make and model?

Can it be fixed with a new tensioner? or new camshaft position sensor?

Can I replace this or will it require specific computer equipment etc that would make DIY unfeasible?

Is there a dealership recall fix?

All information is appreciated!
