Smart Key for Dummys
Can I buy an extra smart key coded and cut for my car on the internet? My car came with only one smart key and a broken emergency metal key. Ebay sells used ones they say can be reprogramed and recut for $60 to $100. Dealer or locksmith has to make money too... How much and where can I get one besides the dealer? Local dealer says its $700? Whats the real story?

Even if you buy one from eBay, you need the dealer to program it for you and as far as I know none will agree to do it unless you buy it from them. It becomes a cool paperweight. Looking around other MB dealerships may help you a bit. Part of it I believe is due to prevention of vehicle theft and fraud. Good luck.

So what you are saying is no reputable Company out there sells a programed and cut key besides the dealer? OK, anyone have a dealer that I can order the key from at a decent price? I would like to buy 2 one for my cl500 and one for my gl450.

i believe you have to go to a dealer in person and show them your registration, etc. or they won't sell you one. so what i'm saying is check all dealers in your vicinity.

I found that dealing with the parts department verses the service department nets much better prices!!! For some reason if I order a key from parts I can get it as cheap as $225 for the 03 CL500 and $350 for the 09 GL450 yet if I price it as a service department repair its twice the price!!!

Wow... That's awesome. So the parts dept will program it for you at that price.....???
Make sure it includes the labor and not the price for just the key. The service dept probably gave you the estimated final price. That's too much of price difference though. Keep us posted. Good luck.

You need to go in person to the dealer with your registration before they order you a key programmed to your car
As everyone else says , call all the nearby dealership parts departments you are willing to drive to, get their price over the phone for a complete programmed key and go to the dealer with the best price
In terms of cost there have been dealers willing to do it as low as $125 total for parts and programming all the way up to $1000- it really depends on the dealer and if the parts dept willing to program it at no extra cost
