ESP Malfunction message - driving me nuts, car not driving like nuts

Hello again,

I keep getting the "ESP Malfunction error - visit workshop" (2003 CL600). Normally it clears itself after a restart often it does not. When it appears, car cannot be driven - throttle is not responding as it should and car can even stall.

Today, when the error appeared, car idle speed was a bit higher than normal for a few seconds, then dropped to normal (zero) when parked. I suspect that speed sensor (or sensors) are halfway "gone" and I'd like to replace them first before replacing the ESP module again (ESP module has been replaced recently).

Does anyone have part number(s) for speed sensors? I'd like to replace all of sensors first and if that does not help I have to get another (overpriced) ESP module.

Thank you,

S.

I've read where replacing the brake light switch off the pedal is a fix for the ESP light, but it also stated the ABS light would be on too.

ESP

I have read that somewhere also.

The problem is, there is no conclusive solution for the "ESP - Visit workshop".

I wonder if it is possible to disable/bypass ESP entirely. For all the advanced technology this car has, it has a lot of stupid design also built-in, like the ESP being capable of entirely disabling or stalling the car.

Question for Mercedes hackers: is it possible to disable/bypass ESP? For all the "safety" it brings, I'd rather drive without it.

After several days of debugging at the local indy shop, we have a solution for the "ESP Malfunction".

It was a very strange problem involving the throttle body, accelerator pedal and brake light switch. In the end, I had to replace all three. Cost factor is about $1200 plus several hours of labor. ESP Module - thank goodness - was working fine.

You also may want to make sure clamps on throttle body hoses are tight. Brake light switch played a role also - this thing gets worn out and since it costs about $20-30, it is a cheap fix to a dreadful problem.

In the process, I removed the engine cover. Engine runs now a bit cooler (about 5 degrees celsius cooler) which is not bad for such a simple "tune". Car is now even more of a beast on the highway.
