Cooling fan problem

Do any of the S.A.M.s control the radiator fan? My indy shop said that the fan can be turned on by computer and operates at all speeds. There is no faults with the sensors or relays. I do have a malfunctioning S.A.M., could that be the problem?

If the fan is on high all the time it usually means the ecu is water damaged
If you have a bad SAM I assume that too is water damaged

You'll probably need both a new ecu and SAM

Thanks for the reply. The fan doesn't come on at all under its own, but can be triggered with diagnostics. Do you happen to know which SAM controls the fan?

Thanks,

If the ECU isn't commanding the fan, you need to look at why. Is there a faulty engine temp sensor and it thinks it doesn't need the fan? Also, there should be a fan request PID in the data, see if the ECU is asking for the fan and not getting it, it should always go on when the a/c is active so it's simple to test. That should give you an idea of where in the chain the breakdown is.

I just did the test. I started the engine and let it warm up a little. I engaged the A/C and the fan did not start. I spun the blades with my hand and it started. My guess is a bad electric motor.

They are expensice though... There was a guy here who just replaced the Motor and it was rather "cheap" compared to a all new fan assembly.

Without the A/C on, at what temp should the fan engage (factory settings)?

Just curious.

I spent about $290 on a complete fan with controller, I don't know if i'd risk it to just change the motor but it's up to you.

My car heats up to 95C on the gauge before the fan kicks on if I don't have the a/c running.
