Diagnostic scan tool
I am looking to get a diagnostic scan tool that will give me the error codes and tell me what that error code is and also have the ability to clear any and all codes.
A complete mobile unit or a one of those obd2 device that uses my smart phone or iPad, etc, if they work well.
I want a good one that gives me the detail I want and can dig into the systems and sub-systems to narrow down the problem codes and not just general broad errors.
Price is important, I am not wanting a DAS system which is expensive.
Something reasonable with a great price point.

A basic code reader like that cannot access any Mercedes specific diagnostics . It will only identify issues that cause the "check engine " light to go on, and give the generic trouble code . It can't read any airmatic , transmission, abs or other sensors .
The launch , carsoft and star DAS are the ones with Mercedes specific diagnostics . The launch can be had for $160 or less ($139 on aliexpress)

If you just want a Bluetooth adapter to work with your phone or tablet I prefer the launch easydiag adapter that works with iPad iPhone or android phone /tablet , it's cheaper (I only paid $36 on aliexpress I think , which gets you the basic code reader functions - plus $66 for Mercedes specific software if you want advanced diagnostics ) and works well, you can actually check things like airmatic if you buy the software for it-but nothing beats star DAS and a laptop

I am eventually going to replace the factory HU in my car too.
Oh I see my reply was late to the party. Didn't read tusabes replies before posting.
