cl65 downpipe upgrade

w215 05-06 cl65 bi turbo downpipe upgrade.....

i spoke to a very famous fabricator in california and i mentioned that i would like a cat less down pipe for my cl65.. so my point here is maybe if i can stir up enough people who are interested in downpipes for there cl65.. maybe i can get a GROUP BUY going and have it cheaper so we all benifit.. so if people are interested i will be having my downpipes made with in this mouth hopefully ( fingers crossed) i will up load pictures of the build and see if you guys like it

thanks

Downpipes are a great mod! I did not stop there- 200 cell cats, 3 inch custom bent stainless all the way back to Burns mufflers. Gained 2mph in the 1/4.

I know some venders sell them but for $900+ for a piece of pipe, that's beyond retarded. The only question I have is will the check engine light turn on because the cat is missing?

I only saw 2 cats on my CL65, so if you remove them the CEL will come on. The catalytic monitoring system will be skewed.

your right the O2 sensor will throw a engine code... you can have a (O2 sensor eliminator ) and everything will be fine

yes, an o2 sim will take care of the codes.

redo the whole exhaust and gain only 2 mph in the 1/4? that seems almost no worth the effort

Down Pipes & cat-delete 3" straight pipes should be mandatory for any V12tt, I've had it all done, hit my PM if you need a hookup? Basically ANY competent muffler shop can do it, go in remove belly pans & wallah' very easy to cutt-off heavy over restrictive oem beer keg sized cats, then replace w/3" DP's etc.. (you'll also get a few psi)

Cost shouldn't be more than $400-$600 out the door for DP's cat delete alone...

How would you get more PSI from removing a restriction without tuning your ecu?

(When a turbo can flow better, its going to make more booost) You will remove back pressure (Cats are mounted directly behind oem turbos, huge restriction) removal/replacing w/DP's enables the Turbos to spool faster, hence the system is capable of producing more boost w/OUT need of re-tune..

Turbo's & SuperChargers are different in this aspect, maybe why you question it etc.. TurboCharged motors hate back pressure, NON TurboCharged cars need to scavange some of the exhasut gases. Turbos work best when there is a big pressure difference on each side of the Turbo.

The stock cats are really restrictive, DownPipes and a free flowing 3" straight pipe exhaust will allow higher boost. The waste gate can be disconnected or modified by multiple ways you will be able to boost till the car hits fuel cut-off... I've modded my SL600 to hit 700+ rwp 800+ rwtq on oem Turbs (Q16 + mods etc)

Re-read my posts, I don't know how to make it anymore clear

The turbo won't make more boost off a down pipe. Yes, it will have the ability to make more but it won't have more boost unless you tune the ECU/wastegate to add more boost. The only way it will make more boost without any other modifications is if you have "boost creep" caused by the flow overwhelming the wastegate.

Yes, a turbo engine likes to flow and does not like restriction but neither does a supercharged engine. It is all about increasing exhaust flow and keeping your exhaust velocity high. Engines don't like backpressure. Then again, backpressure is not an accurate term and should not be used when talking about exhaust flow or velocity.

Your SL sounds awesome. Speedriven doing the work?

this. boost is controled via the wastegates. unless there is creep (wastegates too small) the ecu will vent the extra boost.

you pick a few hp/tq simply because the ecu is programmed to curb to a particular psi at stock volume of exhaust. bigger exhaust/intake etc all increase power because 17 psi at 2.5" pipe is less than 17 psi at 3" pipe air/ exhaust flow.

btw, some back pressure is good at lower and mid rpms- gives you more tq.

free-er exhaust moves the tq curve of an engine up in the rpm range.

thus usually when you do long tube headers/full exhaust mod you feel the car weaker in the low rpms, about the same midrange and more powerful up top.

interesting thing i found out was that the SL class does not have a direct bolt on cat system. the whole exhaust system is 1 whole unit , so if your cats or mufflers go bad you would have to cut and weld a new part on... which got me woundering how my CL65 is going to be, becuase i only want a direct bolt in set up.. and lucky the CL is able to be disconected, so im happy to find out that the CL will be a direct bolt on kit..... so i guess all the SL and S class owners have to cut and weld a catless set up on there cars

anyone run the numbers of a 200 cell cat vs catless? I'm not sure I want to go 100% cat free but would like a little more noise from my car
